Photocatalytic fuel cell for simultaneous antibiotic wastewater treatment and electricity production by anatase TiO2 nanoparticles anchored on Ni foam

Jinhan Li et al.

Summary: Photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC) shows great potential for sustainable electricity production and organic pollutant degradation. However, efficiently degrading organic dyes and antibiotic drugs remains a challenge. In this study, a TiO2-NPs@NF-x photoanode was fabricated to improve the separation efficiency of electrons and holes in the PFC system. The photoanode displayed abundant active sites, enhanced light harvesting capacity, and efficient charge carrier separation. Under specific conditions, the PFC system based on TiO2-NPs@NF-20 photoelectrode demonstrated simultaneous degradation of ciprofloxacin and generation of electricity. Open circuit voltage, short circuit current density, and maximum power density were measured as 1.021 V, 2.4 mA/cm2, and 0.357 mW/cm2, respectively. This cost-effective method contributes to organic waste treatment and power generation.

Distribution, transfer, ecological and human health risks of antibiotics in bay ecosystems

Dong Liu et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the distribution and sources of antibiotics in 439 samples from 30 bays, revealing significant differences in antibiotic concentrations between bays and identifying hotspots in regions like East Asia. The main categories of antibiotics varied between water and sediment, with sources mainly attributed to sewage treatment plant effluent, domestic sewage, agriculture runoff, and discharges from mariculture activities.

Enhanced performance of microbial fuel cell with electron mediators from tetracycline hydrochloride degradation

Guangyi Zhang et al.

Summary: The degradation of TCH in a dual chamber microbial fuel cells (MFCs) led to effective COD removal, with low concentrations of TCH producing electron mediators which improved the performance of the MFC system. Enriched microbial communities played a dominant role in TCH degradation and power generation, with certain electrochemical active bacteria showing tolerance to TCH.

Assessment of WHO antibiotic consumption and access targets in 76 countries, 2000-15: an analysis of pharmaceutical sales data

Eili Y. Klein et al.

Summary: The study found that global consumption of Watch antibiotics increased by 90.9%, while consumption of Access antibiotics only increased by 26.2%. Particularly in low-income and middle-income countries, the increase in Watch antibiotics consumption reflects challenges in antibiotic stewardship. Achieving the WHO national-level target will require policy changes to ensure effective antibiotic use.

Construction of a photocatalytic fuel cell using a novel Z-scheme MoS2/rGO/Bi2S3 as electrode degraded antibiotic wastewater

Tingting Yu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that using MoS2/rGO/Bi2S3@CF in a photocatalytic fuel cell is efficient in degrading water contaminants such as antibiotics, with superior performance compared to rGO/Bi2S3@CF and rGO/MoS2@CF. The electron transfer mechanism and suppression of electron-hole pair recombination were proposed based on analytical techniques and testing under different conditions. This new catalytic pollution control route shows promise for efficient pollutant degradation with low energy consumption.
