Low-cost crushed-rock heat storage with oil or salt heat transfer

Charles Forsberg

Summary: Fossil-fuel power plants are currently meeting the demand for variable electricity and heat due to their low capital costs and the cost of storing fossil fuels. However, in order to transition to a low-carbon economy, the Crushed Rock Ultra-large Stored Heat (CRUSH) system is being developed to provide cost-effective heat storage for variable electricity and heat needs. This new technology utilizes crushed rock as a low-cost heat-storage material and transfers heat through nitrate salt or heat-transfer oils. The system is still in the early stages of development.

On the climate impacts of blue hydrogen production

Christian Bauer et al.

Summary: Blue hydrogen, produced from natural gas with carbon capture and storage, has the potential to be a low-carbon energy carrier if significant CO2 emissions are captured and permanently stored. However, recent research raises questions about its actual climate impact from a life cycle perspective. Advanced reforming with high CO2 capture rates combined with low methane emissions in the natural gas supply chain can lead to substantial reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

The design space for long-duration energy storage in decarbonized power systems

Nestor A. Sepulveda et al.

Summary: Wind and solar energy need to be supplemented by energy storage and firm generating capacity. Long-duration energy storage is seen as a potential solution to intermittency in renewable energy generation. The key parameters for the performance of energy storage are energy capacity cost and discharge efficiency. Storage systems with durations exceeding 100 hours have the greatest impact on electricity cost and firm generation.
