Modeling of energy and emissions from animal manure using machine learning methods: the case of the Western Mediterranean Region, Turkey

Ihsan Pence et al.

Summary: This study calculates the animal manure-based-biogas potentials of three provinces in the Western Mediterranean Region of Turkey and predicts parameters such as carbon dioxide emissions, coal, electricity, and thermal energy using machine learning algorithms. The results show that the support vector machine model performs the best in terms of biogas potential, carbon dioxide emissions, electricity production, and thermal energy estimation.

Agri-biomass supply chain optimization in north China: Model development and application

Juanjuan Wu et al.

Summary: The study developed a multidisciplinary approach to optimize agri-biomass supply chain management and feedstock supply, using a case study of Dezhou City in Shandong Province to illustrate the factors affecting supply costs. It found transportation and purchase costs to be the most significant components, and that the optimal agri-biomass supply chain infrastructure was sensitive to changes in collection cost, transportation cost, and demand. It concluded that exploiting economies of scale to reduce supply costs is worthwhile.

Comparative analysis of bioenergy potential and suitability modeling in the USA and Turkey

Dogus Guler et al.

Summary: Both estimation and evaluation of electric energy potential from biomass are important for renewable energy aims and policies. This study applies a novel methodology to calculate the energy potential from animal manure and agricultural residues in two study areas. Geographic Information Systems and fuzzy logic are used to assess the suitability of different locations. The results show significant differences in the electricity generation potential and facility location suitability between the two study areas.

Development of a Machine learning assessment method for renewable energy investment decision making

Milad Izanloo et al.

Summary: The aim of this study is to develop a hybrid methodology using statistical approach and machine learning algorithm to structure investment decisions in the renewable energy industry. Six main criteria are used to classify and structure the decision-making algorithm, and machine learning algorithms are applied to classify countries based on the risk of renewable energy investment alternatives. The highest accuracy was achieved by Logistic regression, Support Vector Machine, Artificial Neural Network, and Decision Tree algorithms.

Spatial optimization of multiple biomass utilization for large-scale bioelectricity generation

Lasinidu Jayarathna et al.

Summary: This study developed a GIS-based methodology to optimize the location of biomass energy plants, considering plant capacities and transportation distances, in order to maximize environmental and economic efficiency. The study found that 100% bagasse had the highest eco-efficiency for bioelectricity generation, while a combination of 70% sawmill residues and 30% forest harvest residues resulted in the lowest level of traffic congestion.

Applications of artificial intelligence-based modeling for bioenergy systems: A review

Mochen Liao et al.

Summary: AI has been increasingly applied in bioenergy systems to address challenges related to feedstock variability, conversion economics, and supply chain reliability. The review of 164 articles published between 2005 and 2019 shows that AI techniques have unique capabilities in predicting biomass properties, process performance of biomass conversion, biofuel properties, and supply chain modeling and optimization. The future research should focus on developing standardized procedures for selecting AI techniques, enhancing data sharing, and exploring the potential of AI to support sustainable development of bioenergy systems.

Kai Lan et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the economic feasibility of fast pyrolysis biorefineries fed with blended pine residues and switchgrass in the Southeastern U.S. with different supply chain design. The research found that decentralized systems have a higher minimum fuel selling price (MFSP), but there are potential benefits such as mitigated supply chain risks and improved feedstock quality that are difficult to quantify.
