Understanding smectite to illite transformation at elevated (>100 °C) temperature: Effects of liquid/solid ratio, interlayer cation, solution chemistry and reaction time

Melissa M. Mills et al.

Summary: Bentonite, specifically smectite, has been suggested as a buffer material in nuclear waste repositories due to its desirable properties. This study investigates the hydrothermal alteration of smectite to illite, a process that could affect the isolation performance of the material. The results show that the conversion could be relatively fast, contradicting previous assumptions, and that a high potassium concentration is necessary for the structural transition. The overall conversion is limited by the dissolved silica concentration, and the addition of chemical additives can further inhibit the conversion.

Connecting molecular simulations and laboratory experiments for the study of time-resolved cation-exchange process in the interlayer of swelling clay minerals

Emmanuel Tertre et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of self-diffusion coefficients and selectivity coefficients of interlayer cations on cation-exchange reactions in clay-rich media through experiments and simulations. The results showed that considering the averaged values of self-diffusion coefficients and selectivity coefficients of the slowest interlayer cation led to good agreement between experiments and simulations.
