Evolution of Black Talc upon Thermal Treatment

Yuhang Meng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the structural and physical changes of black talc during thermal treatment. The results reveal that the calcination process involves dehydration, organic carbon decomposition, dihydroxylation, and phase transformation. The particle size and specific surface area of black talc increase with higher calcination temperature, and the surface charge changes with the appearance of more amorphous SiO2 and MgO.

Polycaprolactone nanofiber membrane modified with halloysite and ZnO for anti-bacterial and air filtration

Guangjian Tian et al.

Summary: The use of breath protective equipment is crucial for personal health protection against air contamination and bacterial infection. Through modification with nanoparticles, nanofibers used as core filter layer materials in face masks can exhibit multifunctionality, including particulate matter filtration and bacterial inhibition. The HNTs-ZnO/PCL nanofiber membranes developed in this study show high antibacterial efficiency and improved particle filtration performance, making them a promising material for antibacterial protective mask filter layers.

Built to Last: Plant-based Eco-friendly Durable Antibacterial Coatings

Zixu Huang et al.

Summary: The demand for effective and long-term durable antibacterial surfaces has increased in recent decades. However, most successful designs were based on toxic and fossil-based materials, and the longevity of these surfaces remained a challenge. This study presents a disruptive paradigm that combines eco-friendliness and long-lasting antibacterial properties. By incorporating a bio-based active-killing essential oil and nonfouling moieties into a bio-based polyurethane, a long-lasting active-killing property and bacterial attachment prevention were achieved.

Topographical nanostructures for physical sterilization

Yujie Cai et al.

Summary: Advancements in nanobiotechnology have led to a better understanding of cell-surface interactions at the nanoscale level, particularly in interrogating bacterial behavior and fate. Mechanical and physical sterilization methods, which do not rely on chemical substances, have gained attention for their potential in preventing bacterial resistance through direct physical and mechanical interactions at the nanometer scale. The development of various morphologic nanostructures for physical sterilization, such as colloidal nanostructures with mechanical antibacterial capabilities, shows promising potential in anti-infection and antifouling applications.
