Dongyu Tan et al.

Summary: A series of Z-scheme heterojunction g-C3N4/Bi5O7I composites were successfully synthesized using an electrostatic self-assembly method. The optimized 15%-g-C3N4/Bi5O7I exhibited efficient degradation of tetracycline under visible light irradiation, attributed to the generation of photo-induced h+ and O2•- radicals. The migration of photo-induced h+ and e- between g-C3N4 and Bi5O7I was investigated, and the degradation pathways and toxicological simulation of tetracycline were evaluated. The composite also demonstrated good stability and reusability, making it a promising photocatalyst for practical applications.

High-valent cobalt-oxo species triggers hydroxyl radical for collaborative environmental decontamination

Yang Zong et al.

Summary: The overlooked role of high-valent cobalt-oxo species (Co(IV)) in the Co(II)/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) process has been revealed recently, showing that Co(IV) can trigger hydroxyl radical (center dot OH) formation and heavily influence the distribution of oxidized products of PMSO. The oxidative contribution of Co(IV) and center dot OH on organic degradation is specifically dependent on the type and concentration of the substrate. This study provides deeper insights into the evolution pathway of center dot OH mediated by Co(IV) species and enriches understandings on the collaborative oxidation mechanism in Co(IV)-involved processes.

Unraveling the dual defect sites in graphite carbon nitride for ultra-high photocatalytic H2O2 evolution

Xu Zhang et al.

Summary: Defect engineering modified graphite carbon nitride (g-C3N4) with dual defect sites, -C N groups and N vacancies, has been found to significantly enhance the photocatalytic production of H2O2. The dual defect sites form an electron-rich structure and lead to a more localized charge density distribution, which improves light absorption, carrier separation, selectivity, and activity of H2O2 generation. The N vacancies effectively adsorb and activate O-2, while the -C N groups facilitate the adsorption of H+, synergistically promoting H2O2 generation. The modified g-C3N4 achieved a high H2O2 generation rate and apparent quantum efficiency, surpassing previously reported g-C3N4-based photocatalysts.

Ibuprofen degradation by a synergism of facet-controlled MIL-88B(Fe) and persulfate under simulated visible light

Ning Liu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the exposure of different facets in the iron-based MOF MIL-88B(Fe) correlates closely with catalytic activity, with MIL-88B(Fe)-1 showing the best catalytic performance. Presence of Cl, SO42, and NO3 inhibits the degradation of IBP, and the optimum PS dosage used was 60 mg/L. XPS analysis revealed that MIL-88B(Fe)-1 had more Fe2+ content. This work provides new insights into the synergism between photocatalysis and persulfate activation by facet-controlled MOFs for environmental remediation.

Summary: A green and facile approach was proposed to modulate NH2-UiO-66 using seignette salt, resulting in the formation of SS-NH2-UiO-66 with hierarchical pores and abundant vacancies. The enhanced sorption performance for lead (Pb(II)) was attributed to the defect sites, which was confirmed by XAS and XPS analysis.
