Flow-through heterogeneous electro-Fenton system using a bifunctional FeOCl/carbon cloth/activated carbon fiber cathode for efficient degradation of trimethoprim at neutral pH

Yongjun Song et al.

Summary: A novel flow-through heterogeneous electro-Fenton (FHEF) system with a bifunctional cathode was designed for the degradation of trimethoprim (TMP), showing excellent catalytic performance and high current utilization rate. Reasonable degradation pathways for TMP were proposed based on UPLC-QTOF-MS/MS results. Results of toxicological simulation demonstrated a declining trend in the toxicity of the samples during TMP degradation. These results indicate that the FeOCl/CC/ACF-FHEF system is an efficient and economical technology for the treatment of organic contaminants in effluents.

Hydroxyl Radical Production via a Reaction of Electrochemically Generated Hydrogen Peroxide and Atomic Hydrogen: An Effective Process for Contaminant Oxidation?

Yang Li et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates an electrochemical advanced oxidation process (EAOP) that can simultaneously catalyze the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) to generate atomic hydrogen (H*) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in situ. By using a palladium-coated carbon-PTFE gas diffusion electrode (Pd/C GDE) as a catalytic cathode, hydroxyl radicals ((OH)-O-center dot) can be formed by the reaction of electrogenerated H* with H2O2. The H*/GDE process is more effective in degrading organic contaminants compared to the conventional H*/H2O2 process.
