Stabilizing Oxide Nanolayer via Interface Confinement and Surface Hydroxylation

Dongqing Wang et al.

Summary: Surface hydroxylation has been found to affect the stability of Co oxide overlayers in O2. Experimental results show that hydroxyl groups formed on CoO nanoislands produced by deuterium-spillover can enhance oxidation resistance of the Co oxide nanostructures. Theoretical calculations reveal that the interfacial adhesion between CoO and Pt is linearly strengthened with the increasing hydroxylation degree of CoO surface, thus enhancing the interface confinement effect.

Optimizing the synergy between alloy and alloy-oxide interface for CO oxidation in bimetallic catalysts

Ya Pan et al.

Summary: Creating synergistic metal-oxide interfaces is a promising strategy for enhancing the catalytic performance of heterogeneous catalysts. This study presents a comprehensive investigation of the synergistic alloy-oxide interfaces in bimetallic Pt-Co/Al2O3 catalysts for CO oxidation. The Pt1Co0.5/Al2O3 catalyst exhibits the best catalytic performance, with the lowest complete conversion temperature and highest mass specific rate.

Mechanistic effects of Water on Carbon monoxide and propylene oxidation on platinum and palladium bimetallic catalysts

Melanie J. Hazlett et al.

Summary: The effects of water on CO and C3H6 oxidation varied for different Pt, Pd, and Pt-Pd catalysts, influencing light-off temperatures and selectivity towards certain partial oxidation products. Water generally improved CO oxidation light-off for Pd and Pt-Pd catalysts, but had a negative impact on Pt catalysts. In terms of C3H6 oxidation, water had a negative impact on Pd catalysts and a positive effect on Pt catalysts, with Pt-Pd catalysts exhibiting intermediate behavior. Overall, the addition of water did not greatly affect the selectivity towards certain partial oxidation products in the reaction mixture.

Synergy between Metallic and Oxidized Pt Sites Unravelled during Room Temperature CO Oxidation on Pt/Ceria

Frederic C. Meunier et al.

Summary: Experimental results show that metallic and oxidized Pt exist in similar proportions on the surface of nanoparticles at 30 degrees C under reaction conditions. The metallic Pt phase provides strong adsorption sites for CO, while the oxidized Pt phase supplies reactive oxygen, enabling a synergy between these phases.

Propane Dehydrogenation Catalyzed by Isolated Pt Atoms in SiOZn-OH Nests in Dealuminated Zeolite Beta

Liang Qi et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel strategy for the design, synthesis, and characterization of a zeolite-supported propane dehydrogenation catalyst with predominantly isolated Pt atoms stably bonded within nests of Zn atoms. The catalyst exhibits high activity and selectivity to propene, and atomic resolution images confirm the predominantly atomic dispersion of Pt in the nests.

Propane Dehydrogenation on Single-Site [PtZn4] Intermetallic Catalysts

Sai Chen et al.

Summary: The single-site [PtZn4] catalyst developed in this study exhibits high selectivity and ultra-stability, achieving over 95% propylene selectivity in a high temperature range, with no obvious deactivation observed during long-term testing. The surface [PtZn4] ensembles in PtZn IMAs serve as key active site structures, promoting the C-H cleavage of propane while inhibiting further dehydrogenation of surface-bounded propylene, thereby improving selectivity and stability.

Identification of Active Sites in Pt-Co Bimetallic Catalysts for CO Oxidation

Ya Pan et al.

Summary: The study employed advanced catalytic analysis techniques to reveal the structural changes of active centers in a bimetallic Pt-Co/Al2O3 catalyst during CO oxidation, identifying the surface CoO species embedded through direct Pt-O-Co interfacial bonds as active sites for O-2 activation, leading to enhanced catalytic activity.

Highly active and water tolerant Pt/MFe2O4 (M = Co and Ni) catalysts for low temperature CO oxidation

Meng-Ting Zhu et al.

Summary: Pt supported on CoFe2O4 and NiFe2O4 spinel oxides exhibited higher activity for low temperature CO oxidation compared to monometallic oxides. The interaction between Pt and the spinel oxide facilitated oxygen species activation and weakened CO adsorption strength on Pt atoms. These catalysts also showed excellent water tolerance, making them promising for practical applications.

In Situ Raman Observation of Oxygen Activation and Reaction at Platinum-Ceria Interfaces during CO Oxidation

Di-Ye Wei et al.

Summary: The study investigates the activation and reaction of active oxygen species during CO oxidation at platinum-ceria interfaces using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, revealing the evolution of different oxygen species and reaction pathways. Oxygen efficiently dissociates into chemisorbed O on Pt and lattice Ce-O species simultaneously at interfacial Ce3+ defect sites under CO oxidation, leading to a much higher activity at platinum-ceria interfaces compared to that at Pt alone.

Summary: The strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) phenomenon at metal-oxide interfaces plays a crucial role in enhancing catalytic performance, although the mechanistic explanation of SMSI remains a long-standing issue. Through operando characterization tools, active sites at metal-oxide interfaces can be identified under working conditions, providing mechanistic insights into the geometric and electronic functions during catalytic reactions.

Synergetic effect dependence on activated oxygen in the interface of NiOx-modified Pt nanoparticles for the CO oxidation from first-principles

Zihang Yao et al.

Summary: The CO oxidation reaction on NiOx-modified Pt nanoparticles follows the Mars-van Krevelen mechanism, where the interfacial O on NiOx/Pt plays a key role in the combination of adsorbed CO to O. The NiOx/Pt-edge exhibits higher reaction rates due to a lower O vacancy formation energy.
