Targeted Modulation of Competitive Active Sites toward Nitrogen Fixation via Sulfur Vacancy Engineering Over MoS2

Hao Fei et al.

Summary: Electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) using MoS2 with controlled S vacancies (MoS2-Vs) as the catalyst shows high activity and selectivity. The optimized catalyst (MoS2-7H) with a suitable S vacancy concentration (17.5%) exhibits excellent NRR performance with a high NH3 yield rate (66.74 μg/h-1mg-1 at -0.6 V) and selectivity (14.68% Faradic efficiency at -0.5 V). Mechanistic study reveals that the NRR activity is enhanced by S vacancy-strengthened N-2 adsorption and reduced reaction energy barrier, while the selectivity is improved by limiting H-2 desorption kinetics, distinguishing it from other reported MoS2-based catalysts.

Phase Transfer of Mo2C Induced by Boron Doping to Boost Nitrogen Reduction Reaction Catalytic Activity

Binbin Fan et al.

Summary: This study reports a boron-doping strategy to induce phase transfer from hexagonal Mo2C to cubic Mo2C, which improves the catalytic efficiency of nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) and inhibits the competition hydrogen evolution reaction. The boron-doped cubic Mo2C increases the exposure of active sites, regulates the electronic structure, and reduces the energy barrier, leading to a high ammonia yield and faradic efficiency.

Bioinspired Activation of N2 on Asymmetrical Coordinated Fe Grafted 1T MoS2 at Room Temperature

Jiaojiao Guo et al.

Summary: Inspired by the nitrogen fixation process on MoFe nitrogenase, asymmetrical coordinated Fe grafted onto 1T MoS2 successfully reacted with water and dinitrogen at room temperature, producing ammonia with a yield of 12.5% in mole. The activation, fixation, and reduction of dinitrogen were confirmed by isotopically labeled experiments, and the specific coordination environment of grafted Fe in Fe-Mo-S was determined by X-ray absorption spectroscopy analysis. The enriched electron nature and asymmetrical coordination of Fe in Fe-Mo-S materials play a critical role in the bioinspired activation of N-2 at ambient condition.
