Pt-Based Oxygen Reduction Reaction Catalysts in Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells: Controllable Preparation and Structural Design of Catalytic Layer

Hongda Li et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the latest research progress in the controllable preparation of platinum-based ORR catalysts and structural design of catalytic layers in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). The design principle of advanced platinum-based catalysts is introduced, followed by a discussion on the controllable preparation of catalyst structure, morphology, composition and support, and their influence on catalytic activity of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and overall performance of PEMFC. Additionally, the effects of optimizing the structure of the catalytic layer (CL) on the performance of membrane electrode assembly (MEA) are analyzed. Finally, the challenges and prospects of platinum-based catalysts and catalytic layer design are discussed.

A Numerical Investigation on Thermal Gradients and Stresses in High Temperature PEM Fuel Cell During Start-up

Geethu Varghese et al.

Summary: This research investigates the thermal gradients and stresses during the start-up process of High Temperature Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells (HT-PEMFC) using different heating methods, as well as during cell operation through Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) analysis. The use of polyalkylene glycol-based Heat Transfer Fluid (HTF) in the coolant channel significantly improves start-up time, but also results in inhomogeneous stresses in the membrane. The study highlights the vulnerability of the electrolyte component during start-up and the need for a novel start-up strategy to prevent performance degradation.
