The Impact of Sarcopenia in Patients with Peritoneal Surface Disease

Aubrey Juris et al.

Summary: This study evaluated muscle mass in patients undergoing cytoreductive surgery/hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy, finding that about 25% of patients had low muscle mass, which was associated with a higher cancer burden and shorter survival. However, after surgery, none of the patients, including those with low muscle mass before surgery, had decreased muscle mass.

CT Body Composition of Sarcopenia and Sarcopenic Obesity: Predictors of Postoperative Complications and Survival in Patients with Locally Advanced Esophageal Adenocarcinoma

Uli Fehrenbach et al.

Summary: This study used CT scans to assess body composition imaging biomarkers in esophageal cancer patients, finding that sarcopenic patients have a higher risk of complications post-surgery, while those with sarcopenic obesity are more prone to postoperative pneumonia, leading to prolonged hospitalization. Additionally, low preoperative muscle mass and its decrease during follow-up are associated with lower disease-free survival and overall survival.
