p AppIndels.com server: a web- based tool for the identification of known taxon- specific conserved signature indels in genome sequences. Validation of its usefulness by predicting the taxonomic affiliation of >700 unclassified strains of Bacillus species

Radhey S. Gupta et al.

Summary: Taxon-specific conserved signature indels (CSIs) in genes/proteins provide reliable molecular markers for taxonomic purposes. This study introduces a web-based tool/server (AppIndels.com) that can identify known and validated CSIs in genome sequences and use this information to predict taxonomic affiliation. The utility of this server was tested using a database of 585 validated CSIs, and the results showed that it accurately predicted taxonomic affiliation for Bacillus strains.

Macrococcus armenti sp. nov., a novel bacterium isolated from the skin and nasal cavities of healthy pigs and calves

Jennifer Eleonora Keller et al.

Summary: Gram-positive coccoid bacteria were isolated from the nasal cavities and skin regions of pigs and calves. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that these strains belonged to the genus Macrococcus, specifically a novel species called Macrococcus armenti sp. nov. These strains showed similarities to other Macrococcus species, but DNA analysis confirmed their distinctness.

Technological Applications of Macrococcus caseolyticus and its Impact on Food Safety

G. L. P. A. Ramos et al.

Summary: Macrococcus spp. are Gram-positive cocci closely related to staphylococci, recognized as veterinary pathogens and found in food products of animal origin. Especially, Macrococcus caseolyticus, a commonly studied species, is used in fermentation for flavor development but poses a potential risk to human health due to genes associated with antibiotic resistance. This highlights the importance of a critical view on the presence of macrococci in foods and their potential indirect risks to human health.
