Effect of Body Mass Index on the Clinical Outcomes of Adult Patients Treated With Venoarterial ECMO for Cardiogenic Shock

Leandre Girard et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of body mass index (BMI) on clinical outcomes in patients with cardiogenic shock treated with VA-ECMO. The results suggest that BMI alone should not be considered an exclusion criterion for VA-ECMO, and the unfavorable trend observed in underweight patients may be related to malnutrition.

Obesity is not a contraindication to veno-arterial extracorporeal life support

Michael Salna et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the relationship between BMI and clinical outcomes in cardiogenic shock patients undergoing peripheral veno-arterial ECLS. The results suggest that obese patients may require lower predicted flow rates during ECLS treatment but do not differ in lactate clearance compared to non-obese patients. Obese patients are more likely to require continuous veno-venous hemodialysis.

Complications of Peripheral Cannulation Site in Obese Patients on Adult Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation

Nkosi H. Alvarez et al.

Summary: The study found that obese patients with a BMI > 35 have a higher risk of bleeding during peripheral VA cannulation, while there is no difference in bleeding risk between BMI groups in VV ECMO. There was no significant difference in 30-day mortality and ECMO survival rates among different BMI groups in both VA and VV ECMO.
