Patient preferences regarding use of contrast-enhanced imaging for breast cancer screening

Summary: The study aimed to gain understanding of patient preferences towards contrast-enhanced imaging such as CEM or MRI for breast cancer screening. An anonymous survey was conducted among patients undergoing screening mammography at a single academic institution. Results showed that a significant proportion of patients with dense breasts and prior CEM/MRI were willing to accept the risks and costs associated with CEM or MRI as a screening exam. Concerns related to aspects of the imaging procedure varied among patients.

Summary: Benign breast diseases are common gynecologic symptoms, including palpable breast mass, mastalgia, skin changes, and nipple discharge. Practitioners should have a strong understanding of clinical breast care and begin with a thorough medical and family history assessment and clinical breast examination. Further evaluation often includes breast imaging to distinguish benign diseases from malignancies. High-risk breast lesions, although benign, increase the future risk of breast cancer, and patients should receive intensive surveillance and chemoprevention.

High Risk Breast Cancer Screening is a Double Edged Sword: A Qualitative Study of Patient Perspectives on the Ontario High Risk Breast Cancer Screening Program

Summary: This study explored the benefits and drawbacks of MRI-based breast cancer screening for high-risk women. The results showed that MRI provided a psychological safety net that outweighed the distress of abnormal screens. Women accepted this trade-off as a two-edged sword that provided a sense of control. Suggestions for improvement included better communication of the risks and access to counselling.

Psychological consequences of MRI-based screening among women with strong family histories of breast cancer
