Osteoporosis Due to Hormone Imbalance: An Overview of the Effects of Estrogen Deficiency and Glucocorticoid Overuse on Bone Turnover

Chu-Han Cheng et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the molecular mechanisms, risk factors, and treatment methods for estrogen deficiency related osteoporosis (EDOP) and glucocorticoid induced osteoporosis (GIOP) in postmenopausal women. Estrogen deficiency leads to increased bone resorption and decreased bone formation, while excessive glucocorticoid usage interferes with bone remodeling and promotes bone resorption. Treatment for EDOP and GIOP includes avoiding excessive glucocorticoid use and appropriate estrogen supplementation.

Risk of fractures and subsequent mortality in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: A nationwide population-based cohort study

Axel Wester et al.

Summary: Patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) have a slightly higher risk of fractures, but their long-term risk of fractures is comparable to the general population. This suggests that broad surveillance of risk factors for fractures in patients with NAFLD is not necessary.

Summary: By reaching consensus on ICD codes for EHR-based research, the generalizability and comparability of research results can be improved. The expert panel achieved high agreement and provided a detailed list of ICD codes for exposures and outcomes, along with suggestions for addressing common methodological issues.

Bisphosphonate therapy after liver transplant improves bone mineral density and reduces fracture rates: an updated systematic review and meta-analysis

Summary: Both oral and IV bisphosphonates are effective in reducing fracture incidence post-OLT compared to calcium and vitamin D. Oral formulations may also have an advantage over IV in reducing bone loss and fracture incidence post-OLT.

Bone Disease and Liver Transplantation: A Review

Erika Faride Rodriguez-Aguilar et al.

Summary: Liver transplantation is currently the most effective treatment for chronic and acute liver diseases, but patients may develop bone metabolic disease as a chronic complication, increasing the risk of fractures. During the first year post-transplantation, patients experience greater bone loss and should be diagnosed for osteoporosis using bone mineral density and other risk factors.
