A Special Case of Relapsing-Remitting Bilateral Encephalitis: Without Epilepsy, but Responding to Rituximab and with a Brain Biopsy Coinciding with Rasmussen Encephalitis

Pei Liu et al.

Summary: A nine-year-old boy presented with headache, cognitive decline, and hemiparesis. Brain MRI revealed bilateral cortical lesions with new lesions developing over five years. Initial diagnosis of primary angiitis of the central nervous system was considered. Treatment with corticosteroids, immunoglobulins, and cyclophosphamide worsened symptoms. Brain biopsy after five years showed pathology changes consistent with RE. Treatment with rituximab resulted in stable lesions on follow-up MRI. This case highlights the uniqueness and treatment challenges of this immune-mediated condition.

Rasmussen encephalitis: Predisposing factors and their potential role in unilaterality

Susanne Fauser et al.

Summary: The study found that females and individuals over the age of 7 years were more likely to develop RE, with a higher prevalence in the left hemisphere. Perinatal complications and facial autoimmune conditions were more common in RE patients compared to controls. FEver was a more frequent trigger for RE manifestation, and there may be genetic or infectious factors involved in the development of the disease.

Medical treatment of Rasmussen's Encephalitis: A systematic review

S. Lagarde et al.

Summary: Rasmussen's encephalitis is a severe and rare inflammatory brain disease that leads to destruction of one hemisphere and loss of neurological function. It is associated with immune system involvement, and the diagnosis is based on clinical, electrophysiological, and MRI criteria. Antiseizure medications are usually ineffective, and hemispherotomy is the most effective treatment. Immunotherapies targeting the immune system are recommended for patients in the early stages or with mild disease progression.

The ILAE consensus classification of focal cortical dysplasia: An update proposed by an ad hoc task force of the ILAE diagnostic methods commission

Imad Najm et al.

Summary: Ongoing challenges in diagnosing focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) require continuous research and consensus agreement to improve disease definition and classification. An International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) Task Force has reviewed the FCD classification of 2011 and identified existing gaps. They conducted surveys, literature reviews, and clinico-pathological studies to update the classification and propose new categories. This update may contribute to a better understanding of FCD and the development of targeted treatments.

Genetic Factors in Rasmussen's Encephalitis Characterized by Whole-Exome Sequencing

Junhong Ai et al.

Summary: Rasmussen's encephalitis (RE) is a rare chronic neurological disorder characterized by unihemispheric brain atrophy and epileptic seizures. This study identified genetic factors for the first time in RE, suggesting that patients have congenital abnormalities in adaptive immunity and are susceptible to harmful factors.
