Early life nutrition affects the molecular ontogeny of testicular development in the young bull calf

Stephen Coen et al.

Summary: Enhanced early life nutrition affects sexual development in bull calves through neuroendocrine signaling mediated via the hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis. This study aimed to investigate the effects of different feeding regimes on the transcriptome and proteome of bull calf testes during the first 12 weeks of life. Holstein-Friesian bull calves were assigned to either a high or moderate plane of nutrition. Transcriptome and proteome analyses revealed differentially expressed miRNA and mRNA, with the potential involvement of the CDH13 gene in reproductive development. Integration of omics data suggested a role for CDH13 in insulin, IGF-1, androgen, Sertoli cell junction, and cholesterol biosynthesis pathways. These findings highlight the importance of early nutrition in bull calf reproductive development and the potential role of CDH13.

Gene co-expression networks contributing to reproductive development in Holstein-Friesian bull calves

K. Keogh et al.

Summary: This study conducted gene co-expression analyses on the HPT and adipose tissues of bull calves fed different levels of nutrition, and identified co-expressed gene networks associated with metabolic status, reproductive development, and testicular development markers. These networks were also significantly associated with biological pathways related to energy production, cellular growth and proliferation, GnRH signaling, and cholesterol biosynthesis.

Prepubertal nutritional modulation in the bull and its impact on sperm DNA methylation

Chinju Johnson et al.

Summary: Enhanced pre-pubertal nutrition in Holstein bulls had positive effects on reproductive hormone production and sperm production potential, without negatively impacting sperm quality. The study found that the sperm epigenome retains the memory of pre-pubertal nutrition in genes important for spermatogenesis, sperm function, and early embryo development.

Effect of plane of nutrition during the first 12 weeks of life on growth, metabolic and reproductive hormone concentrations, and testicular relative mRNA abundance in preweaned Holstein Friesian bull calves

Stephen P. Coen et al.

Summary: The study examined the impact of nutrition in the first 12 weeks of life on testicular and sexual development in bull calves. Results showed that offering a high plane of nutrition not only improved growth and metabolic status, but also advanced testicular development for precocious sexual maturation.

A high plane of nutrition during early life alters the hypothalamic transcriptome of heifer calves

Jose M. Sanchez et al.

Summary: The study revealed that increased nutrition intake during early calfhood can affect gene expression in the hypothalamus, potentially leading to early sexual development in heifers, with stress-signaling pathways being among the most affected.
