Improvements in Gene Editing Technology Boost Its Applications in Livestock

Iuri Viotti Perisse et al.

Summary: Accelerated development of novel CRISPR/Cas9-based genome editing techniques allows for precise modifications in the mammalian genome, making it the preferred method for introducing gene alterations in livestock species. The expanding list of new CRISPR/Cas9-based genome editing tools includes methods to improve efficiency and specificity, gene regulation, base editing, and epigenetic modifications. Additionally, the advantages and disadvantages of two primary methods for producing gene-edited farm animals, as well as the agricultural and biomedical applications of gene editing technology, are discussed.

Laparoscopic Ovum Pick-Up Followed by In Vitro Embryo Production and Transfer in Assisted Breeding Programs for Ruminants

Hernan Baldassarre

Summary: This article reviews the potential of laparoscopic ovum pick-up (LOPU) combined with in vitro embryo production (IVEP) for accelerating genetic programs in ruminants, highlighting the ability to increase offspring production from elite females with minimally invasive procedures. The technology has been successfully applied to animals of different ages and has gained momentum in dairy cattle in recent years, showing promising results in terms of oocyte retrieval and pregnancy rates.

A systematic review and meta-analysis of spermatozoa cryopreservation, in vitro and in vivo fertility practices in water buffalo

Syed Aftab Hussain Shah et al.

Summary: The study explored different aspects of buffalo spermatozoa during cryopreservation using a meta-analysis of 285 studies published from 2008 to 2020. India led the research efforts, followed by countries like Pakistan, Egypt, and Iran. The research mainly focused on supplements/additives/media in the freezing semen extender. The study concluded that there is a need to further improve the quality of research on spermatozoa cryopreservation and apply these findings for evaluating fertility potential.

Lack of effect of melatonin on ovarian function and response to estrous synchronization and fixed-time AI during the nonbreeding season in lactating dairy buffalo (Bubalus bubalis)

Nelcio Antonio Tonizza de Carvalho et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate whether pretreatment with melatonin could enhance ovarian follicular functions and improve response to estrous synchronization and fixed-time AI in lactating dairy buffalo during the nonbreeding season. The results showed that treatment with melatonin for 20 days did not affect ovarian functions or the response to an estrous synchronization treatment regimen and TAI.

Advances and Perspectives in the Application of CRISPR-Cas9 in Livestock

Abdul Jabbar et al.

Summary: Genome editing and manipulation have revolutionized livestock production by enabling the production of transgenic food and disease-resistant animals. Recent genome editing techniques, such as ZFNs and CRISPR-Cas9, offer improvements in reproductive traits, disease resilience, and overall animal production, making them superior to traditional methods like cloning.
