Alternating Current Electrolysis for Individual Synthesis of Methanol and Ethane from Methane in a Thermo-electrochemical Cell

Takashi Hibino et al.

Summary: The individual synthesis of methanol and ethane from methane was investigated using a thermo-electrochemical cell. Methane was directly oxidized at an anode consisting of sub-10 nm Pt and Fe particles. The formation of methanol occurred through the formation of active oxygen intermediates from water vapor in humidified methane electrolysis, while ethane was produced via the dissociation of C-H bonds and subsequent dimerization of (CH3)-C-· radicals in unhumidified methane electrolysis. Continuous electrolysis was hindered by overoxidation of the anode, but this problem was avoided by alternating current (AC) electrolysis.
