Solar Efficiency of Azo-Photoswitches for Energy Conversion: A Comprehensive Assessment

Wenjin Sun et al.

Summary: Photoswitches can absorb solar photons and store them as chemical energy. However, the solar efficiency of typical azo-switches is found to be below 1.0%, far from the proposed limits. Azopyrazoles exhibit higher solar efficiencies than azobenzenes due to improved quantum yield and photoisomerization yield. The use of light filters to improve isomerization yield can reduce solar efficiencies by narrowing the usable range of solar spectrum.

In Silico Design of Dihydroazulene/Vinylheptafulvene Photoswitches for Solar-Energy Storage Guided by an All-Around Performance Descriptor

Enrique M. Arpa et al.

Summary: This study introduces a comprehensive performance descriptor combining multiple criteria and uses computational methods to evaluate the performance of newly designed DHA/VHF switches for solar-energy storage. Several switches with excellent overall properties, which contain a structural motif absent in previous compounds, are identified. Some of these switches can form the energy-storing VHF isomer through a simple photoisomerization reaction. The results suggest that these switches show great promise for further development in solar-energy storage applications.

Summary: This review discusses a family of atomistic, mostly quantum chemistry based semiempirical methods for describing large molecules in gas and condensed phase. These methods are derived from a density functional perturbation expansion and emphasize parameter availability for almost the entire periodic table, with improvements in atomic orbital basis set and interaction treatments. The methods are consistent with accurate gas phase theoretical reference data and have been extended for electronic spectra and response properties.

Liquid-Based Multijunction Molecular Solar Thermal Energy Collection Device

Zhihang Wang et al.

Summary: The study explores the potential of a photoswitchable molecules-based solar thermal energy storage system (MOST) and uses a multijunction device combining various photoswitches to push the efficiency limit on solar energy collection and storage. Experimental demonstration of a three-layered MOST device with different photoswitches in liquid state shows the feasibility of increasing energy capture and storage behavior by tailoring molecules. This conceptual device introduces a new approach to optimize molecular candidates for MOST, showing that significant improvements can be made by efficiently storing solar energy at specific wavelengths.
