Catalytic Asymmetric Hydroalkoxylation and Formal Hydration and Hydroaminoxylation of Conjugated Dienes

Shao-Qian Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, a comprehensive investigation was conducted towards the stereoselective formal hydration and hydroaminoxylation of conjugated dienes by synthesizing new P,N-ligands and identifying an aryl-derived oxime as a surrogate for water and hydroxylamine. Additionally, the asymmetric hydroalkoxylation with new P,N-ligands was elucidated. Furthermore, versatile derivatizations following hydration provided indirect but concise routes to formal hydrophenoxylation, hydrofluoroalkoxylation, and hydrocarboxylation of conjugated dienes that have not been reported before. Finally, a ligand-to-ligand hydrogen transfer process was proposed based on preliminary mechanistic experiments.

Unusual Enantiodivergence in Chiral Bronsted Acid-Catalyzed Asymmetric Allylation with β-Alkenyl Allylic Boronates

Shang Gao et al.

Summary: We report a rare example of enantiodivergent aldehyde addition with beta-alkenyl allylic boronates via chiral Bronsted acid catalysis. The use of 2,6-di-9-anthracenyl-substituted chiral phosphoric acid catalyst enabled the asymmetric allylation using beta-vinyl substituted allylic boronate, leading to alcohols with R absolute configuration. Surprisingly, the sense of asymmetric induction of the catalyst in these reactions was opposite to previous reports. Moreover, the reactions with beta-2-propenyl substituted allylic boronate under the same acid catalyst resulted in the formation of homoallylic alcohol products with S absolute configuration. Computational studies suggested that unusual substrate-catalyst C-H...pi interactions in the favored reaction transition state were responsible for the observed enantiodivergence.

Highly Diastereo- and Enantioselective Synthesis of 3,6′-Bisboryl-anti-1,2-oxaborinan-3-enes: An Entry to Enantioenriched Homoallylic Alcohols with A Stereodefined Trisubstituted Alkene

Jichao Chen et al.

Summary: A Cu-catalyzed carboboration reaction was developed to generate enantioenriched 3,6'-bisboryl-anti-1,2-oxaborinan-3-enes. DFT calculations revealed the formation of a stable (3)eta-allylic copper intermediate during the initial diene 1,2-borocupration. The subsequent aldehyde addition proceeded under Curtin-Hammett control to provide products with high enantioselectivities, with the three boryl groups in the products properly differentiated for further transformations into enantioenriched homoallylic alcohols with a stereodefined trisubstituted alkene.

Catalyst Design Principles Enabling Intermolecular Alkene-Diene [2+2] Cycloaddition and Depolymerization Reactions

Megan Mohadjer Beromi et al.

Summary: Aryl-substituted pyridine(diimine) iron complexes promote catalytic cycloadditions of alkenes and dienes, with the structural rigidity of the tridentate pincer enabling rare s-trans diene coordination and facilitating cyclobutane formation from a metallacyclic intermediate. Studies on ruthenium congeners revealed that accessing the +3 oxidation state triggers C(sp(3))-C(sp(3)) reductive elimination, with redox involvement of the pyridine(diimine) ligand under thermal conditions for iron complexes and requiring blue light irradiation for ruthenium complexes. These findings highlight important design principles for future catalyst development and chemical recycling of cycloaddition polymers.
