Recent advances in catalytic conversion of biomass derived 5-hydroxyme-thylfurfural into 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid

Summary: With the aggravation of global environmental problems and the shortage of fossil resources, finding environmentally friendly renewable chemicals and fuels to replace fossil resources has become particularly important. This review systematically summarizes the catalytic routes for the preparation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from hexose and the production of 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) from HMF. The effects of different catalytic systems on the yield of target products are analyzed, and the limitations of current catalytic systems are discussed. Electrocatalysis and biocatalysis, based on green chemistry approaches, energy efficiency, mild reaction conditions, and high selectivity, are important for the effective utilization of biomass resources in the future.

The mixed electrode of NiOOH-Cu(OH)2 showed higher activity and faster conversion of HMF. By preparing a nanoframe structure, the oxidation kinetics of NiOOH/Cu(OH)2 for HMF was further enhanced, achieving instantaneous conversion to FDCA.

Directed evolution of an efficient and thermostable PET depolymerase

Summary: The recent discovery of IsPETase, a hydrolytic enzyme that can degrade polyethylene terephthalate (PET), has sparked interest in using biocatalytic approaches to recycle plastics. In this study, we describe an automated, high-throughput directed evolution platform for engineering polymer degrading enzymes. By applying catalytic activity under elevated temperatures, a thermostable IsPETase variant (HotPETase) was successfully engineered to operate at the industrial processing temperature of PET. This HotPETase enzyme showed improved efficiency in degrading PET compared to previously reported enzymes and could selectively breakdown the PET component of multi-materials.

Efficient Electrocatalytic Oxidation of Glycerol via Promoted OH* Generation over Single-Atom-Bismuth-Doped Spinel Co3O4

In situ electrochemical activation of Co(OH)2@Ni(OH)2 heterostructures for efficient ethanol electrooxidation reforming and innovative zinc-ethanol-air batteries

Summary: In this study, Co(OH)(2)@Ni(OH)(2) heterostructures were synthesized using a metal-organic framework precursor in a one-pot hydrothermal method. The catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic activity and stability in the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR), converting ethanol into acetate with a high faradaic efficiency of 97.9%. The high performance was attributed to the double hydroxide heterostructure further processed by electrochemical activation. The active sites for EOR were identified as Ni (NiOOH) through in situ Raman spectra and DFT calculations.

Identification and manipulation of dynamic active site deficiency-induced competing reactions in electrocatalytic oxidation processes
