Chiral Hierarchical Architecture Induced by Confinement-Assisted Living Supramolecular Polymerization of Simple Achiral Molecules

Yingtong Zong et al.

Summary: This article describes a chiral supramolecular assembly (CSA) based on achiral molecules, which provides important clues for understanding the origin of biological chirality. By utilizing the two-dimensional confined space of layered double hydroxide (LDH), simple achiral molecules can be arranged into staggered bilayer structures, forming non-mirror image chiral supramolecular isomers (CSIs). This strategy breaks the stereotype that complex molecular structures and symmetry breaking mechanisms are necessary for the formation of detectable CSA by achiral molecules.

Photo-triggered full-color circularly polarized luminescence based on photonic capsules for multilevel information encryption

Siyang Lin et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the development of device-friendly solid films with color tunability by utilizing Forster resonance energy transfer (FRET) platforms consisting of chiral donors and achiral molecular switches in liquid crystal photonic capsules (LCPCs). These LCPCs exhibit photoswitchable circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) from blue emission to RGB trichromatic signals under UV irradiation, showing strong time dependence due to different FRET efficiencies at each time node. Based on these properties, the concept of multilevel data encryption using LCPC films is demonstrated.

Light Reconfigurable Topological Optical Phase Structure Enabled by a Photoresponsive Chiral System

Xiao-Qian Wang et al.

Summary: The ability to achieve significant phase modulation at low applied field in liquid-crystal-based devices has promising applications in polarization control and wavefront shaping. This study demonstrates reflective wavefront shaping through geometric phase when circularly polarized light is Bragg reflected by a spatially orientated chiral layer, utilizing the polarization-selective reflectivity of chiral liquid crystals (CLCs). The introduction of a photosensitive chiral dopant enables the establishment of a hybrid aligned photoresponsive CLC system, which allows simultaneous light modulation of topological geometric phase and dynamic phase through helical pitch manipulation.

Reversible Handedness Inversion and Circularly Polarized Light Reflection Tuning in Self-Organized Helical Superstructures Using Visible-Light-Driven Macrocyclic Chiral Switches

Hao Wang et al.

Summary: A series of macrocyclic azobenzene-based chiral photoswitches have been designed, synthesized, and characterized. The photoswitches, when doped in achiral liquid crystals, exhibit enhanced helical twisting power and form self-organized helical superstructures called cholesteric liquid crystals. Reversible photoisomerization can be achieved by visible light, and the photoswitches with shorter substituents enable handedness inversion of the liquid crystals. This is the first example of ortho-linked azobenzene-based photoswitches that enable handedness inversion in cholesteric liquid crystals.

Self-Assembly and Circularly Polarized Luminescence from Achiral Pyrene-Adamantane Conjugates by Selective Inclusion with Cyclodextrins

Chenchen Yang et al.

Summary: The interaction between guest chromophores or lumiphores with host chiral cavity and their induced chirality is an important topic in supramolecular chemistry. Kodaka and Harata proposed a rule to explain the induced circular dichroism of the guest chromophores by host cyclodextrins. However, it remains unknown how a circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) signal will change when the lumiphores interacted with cyclodextrins in different modes. Here, we designed an achiral pyrene-adamantane conjugated guest molecule, N-(pyren-1-yl)adamantane-1-carboxamide (ACNP), and investigated its interactions with alpha/ beta/gamma-cyclodextrins (CDs) and its induced CPL. Depending on the size match of the pyrene, adamantine with different cyclodextrins, distinct performance was observed. While alpha-CD could not induce a CPL signal of ACNP, beta-CD could induce CPL in two modes, through adamantyl or direct pyrenyl induction, which could produce a CPL signal with opposite signs. gamma-CD could always induce a negative CPL signal. Therefore, a rule of induced CPL of lumiphores by cyclodextrins can be proposed.
