In situ Reaction Monitoring in Photocatalytic Organic Synthesis

Amiera Madani et al.

Summary: Visible-light photocatalysis provides useful methodologies for synthetic organic chemistry, but the mechanisms of these reactions are often not fully understood. In situ reaction monitoring using dedicated techniques has been shown to be suitable for identifying intermediates and obtaining kinetic insights, providing a more comprehensive understanding of photocatalytic reactions. This minireview surveys these technologies and discusses examples where reaction monitoring was used to elucidate the mechanism of photocatalytic reactions.

Low-temperature nitrogen-bearing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon formation routes validated by infrared spectroscopy

Daniel B. Rap et al.

Summary: This study reveals an efficient formation pathway from monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons to nitrogen-bearing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (N-PAHs) at low temperatures. The experimental approach combines kinetics with spectroscopic probing and identifies key reaction intermediates and the final nitrogen-containing PAH product. The results have implications for the chemistry of the interstellar medium and Titan's atmosphere, as well as the development of astrochemical models and infrared observations.

Visible-light-promoted denitrogenative ortho-selenylation reaction of benzotriazinones: synthesis of ortho-selenylated benzamides and ebselen analogs

Bo-Xi Liu et al.

Summary: A visible-light-promoted regioselective denitrogenative cross-coupling between benzotriazinones and selenosulfonates has been developed for the synthesis of ortho-selenylated benzamides. The reaction provides good yields and demonstrates a general substrate scope. Furthermore, this protocol has been successfully employed for the one-pot two-step synthesis of a series of ebselen and its analogs.

Action Plots in Action: In-Depth Insights into Photochemical Reactivity

Ishrath Mohamed Irshadeen et al.

Summary: This study utilized measuring action spectra to map covalent bond formation and cleavage, revealing that UV/vis spectra fail to accurately predict photochemical reactivity. The research demonstrates that tunable lasers can selectively excite molecules, allowing for in-depth exploration of the mechanisms of photoinduced reactions.

Structural Investigation of Photochemical Intermediates in Solution by Cold UV Spectroscopy in the Gas Phase: Photosubstitution of Dicyanobenzenes by Allylsilanes

Yuma Kitamura et al.

Summary: Electrospray ion sources with an in-line quartz cell were used to produce photochemical intermediates in solution, showing that C11H9N2- was simultaneously converted to neutral and cationic species, which are stable intermediates in the photosubstitution reaction. This demonstrates the potential use of cold gas-phase UV spectroscopy for investigating electronic and geometric structures of photochemical intermediates in solution.

Visible-light-induced denitrogenative phosphorylation of benzotriazinones: a metal- and additive-free method for accessing ortho-phosphorylated benzamide derivatives

Fushan Chen et al.

Summary: Metal-free, visible-light-induced denitrogenative phosphorylation of 1,2,3-benzotriazinones was achieved using eosin Y as a photoredox catalyst. The method allows for efficient synthesis of aryl-phosphonates, aryl-phosphinates, and aryl-phosphine oxides under sunlight or a blue LED as a light source, demonstrating clean reaction profile, energy efficiency, and broad substrate scope.
