Quantitative, non-destructive elemental composition analysis of 3D-structured samples

Laszlo Szentmiklosi et al.

Summary: Prompt-gamma activation analysis (PGAA) is a non-destructive nuclear analytical method that accurately determines the elemental composition of samples. An experimental procedure has been developed to collect position-sensitive PGAA spectra, and a generally-applicable matrix-effect correction method based on Monte Carlo simulations has been developed to eliminate bias between measurement points. This procedure has been validated for non-invasive, spatially-resolved, non-destructive bulk analysis of voluminous, inhomogeneous, and/or spatially structured samples.

Determination of Hepatic Iron Deposition in Drug-Induced Liver Fibrosis in Rats by Confocal Micro-XRF Spectrometry

Qianqian Xu et al.

Summary: Liver fibrosis is an important stage in the development of chronic liver disease. In this study, confocal mu-XRF was used to analyze the deposition of iron in liver fibrosis induced by TAA. The results suggest that iron deposition may play a significant role in the progression of hepatic fibrosis induced by TAA.

Fundamental research for a new confocal line X-ray spectrometer

Hitomi Nakano et al.

Summary: A new confocal line XRF (C-L-XRF) system was designed in this study, which can obtain elemental information of a larger area and higher intensity compared to conventional confocal point XRF (C-P-XRF) analysis. The spatial resolution of C-L-XRF is approximately 2.9 and 2.6 times higher in the horizontal and depth directions, respectively, than that of C-P-XRF. Additionally, C-L-XRF can achieve an XRF intensity approximately 33 times higher than C-P-XRF.

Calcite Nanotuned Chitinous Skeletons of Giant Ianthella basta Marine Demosponge

Ahmet Kertmen et al.

Summary: This study elucidated the nanostructural organization of skeletal microfibers of the marine demosponge Ianthella basta and showed for the first time the presence of a calcitic mineral phase in verongiid sponges. Experimental data suggest a possible role for chitin as a template for calcification. The discovery is expected to broaden knowledge in biomineralization science and the potential applications of calcium carbonate in various fields.

Preparation of Reinforced Anisometric Patchy Supraparticles for Self-Propulsion

H. Esra Oguztuerk et al.

Summary: This study presents a method for preparing fumed silica-based anisometric supraparticles with well-defined catalytically active patches suitable for self-propulsion. The particles contain Pt-covered magnetite nanoparticles that can decompose fuel and propel the particles. Various additives and treatments are explored to enhance mechanical stability and long-time stability during self-propulsion. Confocal micro-X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy is used to investigate the internal structure, allowing for optimized patchy supraparticles for potential applications in propulsion-enhanced catalysis.

Increasing the sensitivity of micro X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy through an optimized adaptation of polycapillary lenses to a liquid metal jet source

Leona J. Bauer et al.

Summary: The combination of brilliant liquid metal jet sources (LMJS) and polycapillary lenses can significantly improve the excitation efficiency of traces of transition metals by micro-X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (mu XRF) in the laboratory. By optimizing the parameters of polycapillary lenses and energy dependent influence of the source spot size, a significant increase in excitation efficiency for specific elements can be achieved, resulting in clearer and more detailed analysis results.
