Sesamol alleviates manganese-induced neuroinflammation and cognitive impairment via regulating the microglial cGAS-STING/NF-zB pathway

Jinxia Wu et al.

Summary: Excessive manganese exposure is harmful to human health, leading to neurodegeneration and cognitive dysfunction. Inflammatory responses mediated by microglia play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of Mn-induced neurotoxicity. Sesamol, derived from sesame, has been shown to have neuroprotective properties. This study found that sesamol mitigated learning and memory deficits caused by Mn exposure and reduced microglial activation and proinflammatory mediators expression. Sesamol also inhibited the cGAS-STING pathway, providing evidence that it may serve as an effective therapeutic for Mn-induced neurotoxicity.

N-doped carbon quantum dots as fluorescent probes for high-sensitivity detection of selected azo dyes

Ru Chen et al.

Summary: A fluorescent probe, N-CQDs, was developed for detecting azo dyes in wastewater. The N-CQDs were synthesized in one step using citric acid and urea as precursors with the microwave method. Characterization of the N-CQDs showed the presence of N and oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface, with higher N content compared to CQDs. The N-CQDs exhibited uniform spherical particles with a size of approximately 5 nm and emitted strong fluorescence at 550 nm when excited at 290 nm. The fluorescence intensity of the N-CQDs showed a good linear relationship with the concentration of the selected azo dye EBT in the range of 0-50 μM. The N-CQDs could be reused according to the calculated fluorescence lifetime. The optimal conditions for using N-CQDs as a fluorescence probe were room temperature and a pH value of 8. Overall, using N-CQDs as a fluorescent probe for detecting azo dyes is cost-effective, simple, highly sensitive, and yields satisfactory results.
