Facile method to synthesize fluorescent chitosan hydrogels for selective detection and adsorption of Hg2+/Hg+

Congwei Li et al.

Summary: A fluorescent chitosan-based hydrogel was developed for the selective detection and adsorption of Hg2+/Hg+ in aqueous environment. The hydrogel exhibited a detection limit of 0.3 μM and an adsorption capacity almost seven times higher than that of the original chitosan. The recognition site for Hg2+/Hg+ was formed through the reaction between chitosan and the amino group on the BODIPY molecule.
