Label-Free and Ultrasensitive Detection of Butyrylcholinesterase and Organophosphorus Pesticides by Mn(II)-Based Electron Spin Resonance Spectroscopy with a Zero Background Signal

Li Tang et al.

Summary: Mn(II)-based electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy was used for detecting butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) and organophosphorus pesticides (OPs). MnO2 nanosheets were synthesized and used as the catalyst for the hydrolysis of S-butyrylthiocholine iodide (BTCh) into thiocholine. Thiocholine can reduce Mn(IV) in MnO2 nanosheets to Mn(II), which gives a good ESR signal. Mn(II) can be directly determined by ESR spectroscopy without the need for additional sensing probes. The ESR signal of Mn(II) is proportional to the catalytic activity of BChE and can also be used to detect OPs that inhibit BChE activity.
