Inhalation bioacessibility and lung cell penetration of indoor PM2.5-bound PAEs and its implication in risk assessment

Mantuo Huang et al.

Summary: Several studies have evaluated the inhalation exposure of phthalate esters (PAEs) in PM2.5, but have not considered inhalation bioaccessibility and lung penetration of PAEs in risk assessment. This study investigated the inhalation bioaccessibility of PAEs in indoor PM2.5 samples using simulated lung fluids, and tested the lung cell permeation and metabolism of selected PAEs using a lung cell model. The results showed that the inhalation bioavailability of PAEs varied depending on the health condition and the presence of inflammation.

In-vitro inhalation bioavailability estimation of Metal(oid)s in atmospheric particulate matter (PM2.5) using simulated alveolar lysosomal fluid: A dialyzability approach

Natalia Novo-Quiza et al.

Summary: A novel in-vitro method was developed to assess the inhalation bioavailability of metal(oid)s in PM2.5 samples using synthetic body fluids, human physiological conditions, and a simulated air-blood barrier. Metal(oid)s such as Cu and Mo showed the highest bioavailability, while Al, Co, Cr, Fe, Ni, Ti, and Tl had low bioavailability. Health risk assessment suggested no risk to human health based on inhalation exposure scenarios and hazard indexes. The chemical composition of PM2.5 influenced the bioavailability of certain metals.

Joel Sanchez-Pinero et al.

Summary: This study measured the oral bioavailability of PAHs in PM10 using a simulated digestive system test, and found that the bioavailability was below 5%, with fluorene, anthracene, acenaphthene, and phenanthrene being the most bioavailable PAHs. Health risk assessment showed no carcinogenic risk from orally bioavailable PM10-bound PAHs.

Summary: Little effort has been made to study the impact of chemical additives in microplastics on human health. This study investigated the oral bioaccessibility of plastic additives and monomers in low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) microplastics using standardized bioaccessibility tests. It was found that the gastric and gastrointestinal bioaccessibility of certain additives and monomers was highest under fed-state gastrointestinal extraction conditions.

Inhalation Bioaccessibility of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in PM2.5 under Various Lung Environments: Implications for Air Pollution Control during Coronavirus Disease-19 Outbreak

Pengfei Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of COVID-19 on the inhalation bioaccessibility of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in PM2.5. It shows that lung inflammation can increase the solubilization and competitive desorption of PAHs, thus increasing exposure risk. Considering the large number of COVID-19 infections, this finding has important implications for the scientific community and policy makers.

Summary: Polycyclic musks (PCMs) are widely used in daily products and have raised concerns due to their environmental impact. There are knowledge gaps that require further research on the concentrations, distribution, determination methods, ecotoxicology, and environmental behavior of PCMs. Prospective research on microinterface effects, molecular mechanisms, and bioremediation of PCM-contaminated areas is needed to reduce environmental pollution and promote the development of remediation technologies.

Inhalation bioaccessibility estimation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from atmospheric particulate matter (PM10): Influence of PM10 composition and health risk assessment

Joel Sanchez-Pinero et al.

Summary: The study assessed the inhalation bioaccessibility of PAHs in atmospheric PM10 samples collected in a European urban site. A method involving PBET extraction, VALLME, and HPLC-FLD quantification was used. Different bioaccessibility levels were found for different PAHs, and the study also looked at the relationship between PM10 composition and PAHs bioaccessibility ratios. The results suggest no carcinogenic risk from the target PAHs during the sampling campaign.

Suspended fine particulate matter (PM2.5), microplastics (MPs), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in air: Their possible relationships and health implications

Razegheh Akhbarizadeh et al.

Summary: The study found that in the urban area of Bushehr port, PM2.5 and MPs may act as carriers for airborne MPs and PAHs, respectively, and the transport of MPs is highly controlled by atmospheric conditions. Petrogenic sources from both proximal and distal origins play an important role in the level of PAHs. Chronic health risk evaluation via inhalation revealed a high potential cancer risk for PM2.5-bound PAHs in winter.
