Latest strategies for rapid and point of care detection of mycotoxins in food: A review

Zhiguang Suo et al.

Summary: Mycotoxins in agricultural products are highly carcinogenic and genotoxic to humans. Traditional laboratory testing methods are being challenged due to their high cost and slow results, necessitating the development of rapid detection methods. This review focuses on the latest strategies, particularly nanomaterial-integrated biosensors, that enable rapid and on-site testing. Several strategies suitable for point of care testing (POCT) of mycotoxins, such as ELISA, LFA, fluorescence, electrochemistry, and colorimetry assay, are summarized. POCT strategies are advancing towards intelligence and portability, especially when combined with smartphones. The integration of biosensors and nanomaterials has significantly improved detection performance.

Aggregation-Induced Electrochemiluminescence Frame of Silica-Confined Tetraphenylethylene Derivative Matrixes for CD44 Detection via Peptide Recognition

Yue Jia et al.

Summary: A biosensor was fabricated using mesoporous silica nanosphere (MSN) matrix-confined 1,1,2,2-tetra(4-carboxylphenyl)ethylene (TPE) as an ordered electrochemiluminescence (ECL) emitter and a self-designed WC-7 heptapeptide as the target capturer for CD44 detection. The use of aggregation-induced electrochemiluminescence (AIECL) theory and the MSN-TPE-TEA system improved the reproducibility and consistency of biosensors, making it a stable signal label for trace analysis of biomarkers.

Encapsulation of Tetraphenylethylene Derivative in Liposome Vesicles as Promising Aggregation-Induced Electrochemiluminescence Emitter for Detection of Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor 2

Yue Jia et al.

Summary: A sensitive signal-on electrochemiluminescence biosensor using liposome-encapsulated 1,1,2,2-tetra(4-carboxylphenyl)ethylene (TPE) as an aggregation-induced electrochemiluminescence (AIECL) emitter for biomarker detection was developed. The proposed sensing strategy utilized the spatial confinement effect and intramolecular self-encapsulation of TPE and triethylamine (TEA) molecules in liposome cavities for aggregation-inducedenhancement. The peptide sequence WTGW-CLNP-EEST-WGFC-TGSF (WF-20) was used to replace the antibody for reduced steric hindrance on the sensing surface while maintaining affinity. The developed biosensor showed satisfactory properties for the detection of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2), with a detection range of 0.01 to 500 ng/mL and a limit of detection of 6.65 pg/mL.

The evolution of multiplex detection of mycotoxins using immunoassay platform technologies

Saowalak Adunphatcharaphon et al.

Summary: Mycotoxins pose serious threats to public health, the economy, and the environment. The co-contamination of multiple hazardous mycotoxins in commodities and the environment adds complexity to the problem. This review discusses emerging rapid immuno-based multiplex methods for detecting mycotoxins in agricultural products and feed ingredients published within the past five years, including lateral flow, fluorescence polarization, chemiluminescence, surface plasmon resonance, surface enhanced Raman scattering, electrochemical sensor, and nanoarray. The future trend of detection methods for multiple mycotoxins is predicted to rely on advancements in sensor technologies, nanomaterial-based enhancing and reporting signals, rapid sample preparation, and quantitative analysis capacity.

Haining Cui et al.

Summary: A disposable ratiometric electrochemical aptasensor was constructed for highly sensitive detection of aflatoxin B1. Au nanoflowers on ITO surface were used for DNA anchoring and methylene blue labeling. The detection was based on the peak current intensity ratio (I-MB/I-Fc) as the signal transducer. The aptasensor exhibited a wide detection range and a low detection limit.

Validation of a Simple and Reliable Method for the Determination of Aflatoxins in Soil and Food Matrices

Julius Albert et al.

Summary: A simple and reliable method for quantitative analysis of Aflatoxins (AFs) in soil and food matrices at environmentally relevant concentrations was presented, demonstrating effectiveness even at trace levels and meeting the quality criteria set by the European Commission for mycotoxins. The method is sensitive, with quantification limits ranging from 0.04 to 0.23 μg/kg for HPLC-FLD and 0.06-0.23 μg/kg for LC-MS, and provides satisfactory recoveries and repeatability values within acceptable limits. Despite both instruments being capable of reliable analysis, the HPLC-FLD method may be more suitable for routine analysis due to its lack of matrix considerations.
