Diminished Counterregulatory Responses to Meal-Induced Hypoglycemia 4 Years After RYGB

Loek J. M. de Heide et al.

Summary: Post-bariatric hypoglycemia is a complication of bariatric surgery, especially Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB). In a study of 44 patients 4 years after RYGB, 48% experienced almost asymptomatic hypoglycemia during a liquid meal test. The hypo group showed no increase in cortisol and epinephrine responses, but higher levels of norepinephrine compared to the non-hypo group.

Counterregulatory responses to postprandial hypoglycemia after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass

Caroline C. Ohrstrom et al.

Summary: This study evaluated counterregulatory responses during postprandial hypoglycemia in patients with postbariatric hypoglycemia who underwent Rouxen-Y gastric bypass surgery. The findings showed that individuals with postbariatric hypoglycemia had minor increases in counterregulatory hormones during postprandial hypoglycemia, but larger hormone responses occurred when glucose levels were lowered during treatment with sitagliptin.

Summary: Nutritional care after bariatric surgery is crucial for preventing deficiencies, and a series of recommendations have been proposed to guide dietary management, supplementation, and treatment of specific deficiencies. The study emphasizes the importance of proper nutrition in post-bariatric surgery patients.

The role of GLP-1 in postprandial glucose metabolism after bariatric surgery: a narrative review of human GLP-1 receptor antagonist studies

Morten Hindso et al.

Summary: RYGB and SG bariatric procedures improve type 2 diabetes, with a more significant increase in GLP-1 associated with RYGB. The role of GLP-1 in postprandial beta-cell function is more prominent after RYGB, while more research is needed to understand the impact of GLP-1 in SG procedures.
