Neighborhood-Level Factors Contribute to Disparities in Hepatocellular Carcinoma Incidence in Texas

Abiodun O. Oluyomi et al.

Summary: By conducting a geospatial analysis of the social determinants of health, we identified racial-ethnic disparities in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) incidence rates in Texas. Our findings showed positive associations between HCC and the proportion of Black or African American, Hispanic, over 60 years of age, in the construction industry, and in the service occupation populations in census tracts, while an inverse association was found with the proportion of population employed in the agricultural industry. These associations varied across Texas census tracts.

Cancer disparities among non-Hispanic urban American Indian and Alaska Native populations in the United States, 1999-2017

Stephanie C. Melkonian et al.

Summary: This study provides an analysis of cancer incidence rates and trends among urban American Indian/Alaska Native populations compared to non-Hispanic White populations in the same urban areas. The study reveals disparities in cancer rates, with higher rates of colorectal, liver, and kidney cancers among urban American Indian/Alaska Native populations, and lower rates of breast, prostate, and lung cancers. The study also highlights an increasing trend in the incidence rates of certain cancers among urban American Indian/Alaska Native populations.

Systematic review of neighborhood socioeconomic indices studied across the cancer control continuum

Kristen A. Sorice et al.

Summary: This systematic review identified and compared existing nSES indices studied across the cancer continuum, and highlighted the significant association between nSES and cancer outcomes. The direction of association varied by cancer site, race/ethnicity, and nSES index, indicating the complex relationship between nSES and cancer disparities.

Summary: This study systematically reviewed the association between outdoor particulate matter (PM) and gastrointestinal (GI) cancers, finding evidence of increased risk of GI cancers, especially liver and colorectal cancers, associated with PM2.5 exposure. However, the number of studies on this topic is limited.

Native and Indigenous Populations and Gastric Cancer: A Worldwide Review

Felina M. Cordova-Marks et al.

Summary: Gastric cancer is a global concern, particularly for Indigenous populations, with limited research specific to this population. Existing literature focuses on subset analyses and biological aspects, with insufficient attention to determinants of health. Indigenous populations face food shortage, exposure to harmful environmental factors, structural racism in the built environment, H. pylori infection, and compromised healthcare as effects of colonialism, contributing to the burden of gastric cancer. Placing gastric cancer in a cultural context can counter colonial perspectives and honor Indigenous culture.

Helicobacter pylori in Native Americans in Northern Arizona

Fernando P. Monroy et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of specific H. pylori virulence factors (cagA and vacA) among Navajo patients and their association with gastric disease. The results showed that the H. pylori genotypes were predominantly cagA Western-type and ABC EPIYA motifs. The vacA s1bm1 genotype was the most prevalent and seemed to be associated with gastritis.

Summary: Education level emerged as the most reliable indicator of gastric cancer risk among SES variables, impacting the predictive ability significantly more compared to income and occupation. It can be utilized as an ideal single indicator of SES-related gastric cancer risk in the absence of multiple SES factors.

Incidence of and Trends in the Leading Cancers With Elevated Incidence Among American Indian and Alaska Native Populations, 2012-2016

Stephanie C. Melkonian et al.

Summary: Cancer incidence rates vary among American Indian and Alaska Native populations, with higher rates for certain cancers such as liver, stomach, kidney, lung, colorectal, and female breast cancers. Between 2012 and 2016, nearly 5,200 excess cancer cases were diagnosed among AI/AN populations, with the Southern Plains region having the highest number of excess cases. Efforts informed by culture could help reduce cancer disparities among AI/AN populations.

Effect of Neighborhood and Individual-Level Socioeconomic Factors on Colorectal Cancer Screening Adherence

Kiara N. Mayhand et al.

Summary: This study found that factors such as age and non-Hispanic Black race were associated with higher adherence to CRC screening, while factors like renting a home, perceiving low healthcare quality, not having a routine checkup within two years, perceiving discrimination, and neighborhood deprivation were associated with lower adherence. Comprehensive socioeconomic indicators at both the neighborhood and individual levels were found to contribute to low CRC screening adherence.

A Review of Colorectal Cancer in Terms of Epidemiology, Risk Factors, Development, Symptoms and Diagnosis

Tomasz Sawicki et al.

Summary: Colorectal cancer is one of the most common malignant tumors, with increasing incidence and mortality rates each year. Genetic and environmental factors, as well as lifestyle choices, play a significant role in its development. Studying the epidemiology and diagnosis of colorectal cancer is crucial for informing future strategies in disease prevention and control.
