Impact of risk factors on early cancer evolution

Clare E. Weeden et al.

Summary: The recent discovery of oncogenic cells in healthy tissues and the prevalence of indolent cancers found incidentally at autopsies reveal a greater complexity in tumor initiation than previously thought. Understanding how this defense is overcome to trigger tumorigenesis and why cancer is so rare at the cellular level is vital to future prevention therapies.

High visceral fat attenuation and long-term mortality in a health check-up population

Jong Hyuk Lee et al.

Summary: This study investigated the prognostic role of increased visceral fat attenuation (VFA) in long-term mortality and low-grade inflammation. It found that VFA was associated with overall survival, cancer-specific survival, and non-cancer-specific survival. Additionally, VFA could further classify sarcopenic obesity (SO) defined by body mass index (BMI) or visceral fat volume index (VFI) and identify individuals at higher risk of long-term mortality.

Low fat mass index outperforms handgrip weakness and GLIM-defined malnutrition in predicting cancer survival: Derivation of cutoff values and joint analysis in an observational cohort

Liangyu Yin et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the optimal thresholds for defining a survival-related low fat mass index (FMI) in Asian oncology populations and analyze the associations of low FMI, handgrip weakness, and malnutrition with cancer survival. The study found that low FMI, handgrip weakness, and malnutrition were independently associated with mortality, and the combination of low FMI and malnutrition had the worst survival outcomes. These findings highlight the importance of including fat mass assessment in routine cancer care to optimize survival outcomes.

Cancer statistics in China and United States, 2022: profiles, trends, and determinants

Changfa Xia et al.

Summary: The study compared the latest cancer profiles, trends, and determinants between China and the USA in 2022. China has a higher incidence of lung cancer, while the USA has more cases of breast cancer. Recent years have seen a significant decrease in lung and colorectal cancer rates in the USA, while liver cancer rates have slightly increased. In China, rates for stomach, liver, and esophageal cancer have decreased gradually, but colorectal cancer rates have increased for the whole population.

Relevance of body mass index as a predictor of systemic therapy outcomes in metastatic melanoma: analysis of the MelBase French cohort data

Y. Di Filippo et al.

Summary: This study found no association between BMI and survival outcomes and adverse events in metastatic melanoma patients undergoing systemic therapy. Despite the obesity paradox suggesting a potential link between higher BMI and better survival, no such relationship was observed in this study.

Marked loss of adipose tissue during neoadjuvant therapy as a predictor for poor prognosis in patients with gastric cancer: A retrospective cohort study

Yingjing Zhang et al.

Summary: This study found that patients with gastric cancer undergoing radical gastrectomy have worse survival outcomes when experiencing significant loss of adipose tissue during neoadjuvant treatment. The loss of visceral adipose tissue and subcutaneous adipose tissue during treatment was associated with poorer overall survival and disease-free survival, while changes in skeletal muscle mass and body weight did not affect survival.

Effects of sarcopenia and malnutrition on morbidity and mortality in gynecologic cancer surgery: results of a prospective study

Jalid Sehouli et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effects of sarcopenia and malnutrition on severe postoperative complications and overall survival in gynecologic cancer patients. Factors such as ECOG status, BMI, phase angle, skeletal muscle index, and tumor stage were found to be predictors of postoperative complications and overall mortality. Preoperative assessment of these factors may help in identifying patients at higher risk for poor outcomes.

Visceral Obesity Promotes Lung Cancer Progression-Toward Resolution of the Obesity Paradox in Lung Cancer

Joseph Barbi et al.

Summary: This study reveals the adverse effects of visceral obesity in patients with NSCLC, showing that high VFI is associated with worse outcomes and an inflammatory tumor transcriptomic signature. The obesity paradox may be partially due to the use of BMI as a measure of obesity and the confounding effects of metformin use.

Influence of body composition, muscle strength, and physical performance on the postoperative complications and survival after radical gastrectomy for gastric cancer: A comprehensive analysis from a large-scale prospective study

Qian-Tong Dong et al.

Summary: This study revealed a complex correlation among body composition parameters, muscle strength, and gait speed in patients undergoing radical gastrectomy for gastric cancer. Grip strength and skeletal muscle index were independently predictive of postoperative complications, while skeletal muscle density and gait speed had independent predictive value for overall survival and disease-free survival.
