Pediatric Medical Traumatic Stress (PMTS) following Surgery in Childhood and Adolescence: a Systematic Review

Anna Stanzel et al.

Summary: This systematic review examined the prevalence, severity, and risks of psychological symptoms in children and adolescents after pediatric surgery, revealing that a small but significant portion experience postoperative psychological distress and post-traumatic stress symptoms. Care of adults with congenital heart diseases in Germany-Leading role by internal medicine specialists and general practitioners

Harald Kaemmerer et al.

Summary: This study investigates the care situation of adults with congenital heart disease (ACHD) in Germany from the perspectives of both patients and primary care physicians (PCP). The results show that there is a lack of awareness among ACHD patients and PCPs regarding specialized care structures nationwide, despite the high demand for specialist care. Future solutions should focus on involving and integrating PCPs more intensively into the existing dedicated ACHD care structures, in collaboration with specialized pediatric cardiologists, cardiologists, and centers.

Post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and depression among adults with congenital heart defects

Regina M. Simeone et al.

Summary: Individuals with congenital heart defects (CHDs) have a higher prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depressive disorders compared to those without CHDs. Among individuals with CHDs, female sex and inpatient admission are associated with higher rates of anxiety/depressive disorders. Early screening and appropriate referral for mental health services may be beneficial for individuals with CHDs.

'Well-being paradox' revisited: a cross-sectional study of quality of life in over 4000 adults with congenital heart disease

Caroline Sophie Andonian et al.

Summary: This cross-sectional study investigated the quality of life in a large cohort of German adults with congenital heart disease, finding that overall ACHDs report a good QOL comparable to German population norms, but with significant differences within different patient subgroups. Older age, female sex, medication intake, and comorbidities were associated with reduced QOL, while certain subgroups may require additional support to cope with disease-related challenges.
