A Benders decomposition framework for the optimization of disjunctive superstructures with ordered discrete decisions

David A. Linan et al.

Summary: This study introduces the logic-based discrete-Benders decomposition (LD-BD) for Generalized Disjunctive Programming (GDP) superstructure problems with ordered Boolean variables. The LD-BD method obtains Benders cuts using neighborhood information of a reformulated version of Boolean variables, and iteratively refines them to converge to a local optimum. Case studies involving the optimization of a network with Continuous Stirred-Tank Reactors (CSTRs) and the design of a distillation column have shown that LD-BD exhibits good performance in finding attractive locally optimal solutions for GDP problems. This method shows promise in solving optimal synthesis problems with ordered discrete decisions in chemical engineering applications.

Optimal design and dynamic transitions of multitask catalytic distillation columns: A Discrete-Steepest Descend Framework

David A. Linan et al.

Summary: This work presents the optimal design and operation of catalytic distillation units using discrete and continuous design and operation variables combined with rigorous non-linear dynamic process models. The proposed optimization method, based on the Discrete-Steepest Descent Algorithm (D-SDA), allows for the simultaneous improvement of design and dynamic transitions. The case study on ethyl tert-butyl-ether (ETBE) production demonstrates that a single CD unit can be optimally designed to produce multiple ETBE grades and optimize its dynamic performance.

Integration of design and NMPC-based control for chemical processes under uncertainty: An MPCC-based framework

Oscar Palma-Flores et al.

Summary: The use of nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) for integration of design and control is an open area of research. In this work, the classical KKT transformation strategy is implemented to convert the bilevel problem into a single-level problem, ensuring optimality in the solution for integrated design and NMPC-based control.
