Five mechanisms blocking the transition towards 'nature-inclusive' agriculture: A systemic analysis of Dutch dairy farming

D. A. Vermunt et al.

Summary: Large scale intensive agriculture dominates the landscape of the Netherlands, with grassland for dairy production occupying over a quarter of its land surface. The adoption of nature-inclusive agriculture practices in the Dutch dairy sector is hindered by insufficient economic incentives, limited action perspective of many dairy farmers, lack of a shared vision for NIA, lack of integral knowledge, and regime resistance. Addressing these blocking mechanisms in a holistic approach is key to accelerating the transition towards NIA in the Netherlands.

Beyond organic farming - harnessing biodiversity-friendly landscapes

Teja Tscharntke et al.

Summary: Organic farming is not the only alternative for harnessing biodiversity in agricultural landscapes. Successful agricultural measures such as diversifying crops and reducing field size are crucial for enhancing biodiversity. Creating a landscape level mosaic of natural habitat patches and crop diversification is key for promoting large-scale biodiversity in both conventional and organic agriculture.

Phosphorus fertilization is eradicating the niche of northern Eurasia's threatened plant species

Martin Joseph Wassen et al.

Summary: An analysis of plant diversity and stoichiometric niches in herbaceous ecosystems across northern Eurasia reveals that phosphorus fertilization and increases in relative phosphorus availability associated with current measures to reduce nitrogen deposition may seriously threaten plant species of high conservation concern. Low absolute and relative phosphorus availability is found to be more critical than nitrogen or potassium availability.

Land-use intensity mediates ecosystem service tradeoffs across regional social-ecological systems

Jiangxiao Qiu et al.

Summary: This study synthesized datasets from four social-ecological systems to examine the impact of land-use intensity on ecosystem service tradeoffs. Findings showed that as land-use intensity increases, the magnitude of tradeoffs between ecosystem services also increases. Moreover, land-use intensity alters the intersection points of provisioning and regulating services along the landscape composition gradient.
