Energy efficiency evaluation, changing trends and determinants of energy productivity growth across South Asian countries: SBM-DEA and Malmquist approach

Wasi Ul Hassan Shah et al.

Summary: This study examines the role of energy efficiency and productivity growth in the ecological improvement of South Asia, and evaluates the determinants of energy productivity change across different South Asian countries. The results show that South Asian countries have the potential to improve their energy efficiency by 27.22%. Technological change, rather than efficiency, is found to be the primary driver of energy productivity growth. The study also highlights a decline in energy efficiency and productivity in South Asia over the study period.

Reducing agriculture irrigation water consumption through reshaping cropping systems across China

Lichang Yin et al.

Summary: This study quantified the unit irrigation water consumption and total irrigation water consumption of major cropping systems in China, and estimated the potential for reducing total irrigation water consumption by optimizing the cultivated areas of different cropping systems. The findings suggest that optimizing cropping systems by adjusting cultivation areas can significantly reduce total irrigation water consumption at both national and regional levels.

Efficiency evaluation of commercial banks in Pakistan: A slacks-based measure Super-SBM approach with bad output (Non-performing loans)

Wasi Ul Hassan Shah et al.

Summary: According to recent data from the State Bank of Pakistan, non-performing loans in commercial banks in Pakistan have significantly increased since 2006. This research aims to investigate the impact of these non-performing loans on the operational efficiency of commercial banks. The study finds that non-performing loans have a negative effect on banking efficiency, while bank size and net interest margin have a positive effect.

The role of energy policy transition, regional energy efficiency, and technological advancement in the improvement of China?s environmental quality

Wasi Ul Hassan Shah et al.

Summary: Energy efficiency and emission reduction are important global concerns in the 21st century due to rapid economic and infrastructure growth. This study examines the energy efficiency of Chinese provinces and finds that there has been progress in the transition from energy security policy to energy efficiency with emission reduction policy. However, more efforts are needed to achieve the energy efficiency targets, especially in the central and western regions where there is a significant technological gap compared to the eastern coastal region.

Does agricultural water conservation policy necessarily reduce agricultural water extraction? Evidence from China

Hang Xu et al.

Summary: This paper uses China's agricultural water conservation policy as an example to examine its impact on agricultural water extraction. The results show that the policy does not lead to a reduction in water extraction, but instead increases it. This may be due to the policy's promotion of agricultural production, particularly through expansion of cultivated and irrigated areas. Furthermore, the potential for crop production on the land may affect the effectiveness of the policy, with regions possessing higher potential experiencing lesser increases in water extraction.

Summary: The study found that the overall efficiency of water resource systems in western China was unevenly distributed, but became more even over the research period. Water use efficiency was generally higher than wastewater treatment efficiency, with economic development having a significant positive impact on water use efficiency, and urbanization and technological innovation positively influencing wastewater treatment efficiency.

Maize grain yield and water use efficiency in relation to climatic factors and plant population in northern China

Liu Yue-E et al.

Summary: Water scarcity is limiting crop production, making improving water use efficiency (WUE) urgent for Chinese agriculture. This study conducted maize population experiments at 25 locations across China, finding that as precipitation increased, maize grain yield initially increased then decreased, with WUE decreasing significantly. Different planting densities showed significant differences in maize grain yield, WUE, and precipitation. Choosing drought-resistant hybrids and optimal planting densities significantly increased WUE, with hybrids playing a more significant role than planting density in improving WUE.
