The Rootstock Genotypes Determine Drought Tolerance by Regulating Aquaporin Expression at the Transcript Level and Phytohormone Balance

David Labarga et al.

Summary: Grapevine rootstocks regulate plant responses to water deficit by supplying water to the scion according to its transpiration demand, but the scion variety can also influence these responses. The effect of rootstock genotypes on scion physiological response, aquaporin expression, and hormone concentrations was assessed under well-watered and water stress conditions. Under well-watered conditions, more vigorous and drought-tolerant rootstocks showed higher photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, and hydraulic conductance compared to less vigorous and drought-sensitive rootstocks. However, under water stress conditions, there were minimal differences between vines depending on the rootstock.

Determining grapevine water use under different sustainable agronomic practices using METRIC-UAV surface energy balance model

J. M. Ramirez-Cuesta et al.

Summary: Due to climate change and the scarcity of natural resources, it is necessary to develop sustainable intensification strategies to optimize water use in vineyards. In this study, water regime, fertilization, and soil management practices were evaluated using the METRIC model and unmanned aerial vehicle imagery. The application of mulching was found to significantly reduce inter-row soil evaporation and increase crop-line evapotranspiration. Deficit irrigation and fully irrigated strategies both increased vine water use and yield, leading to improvements in water use efficiency.

Quantifying the grapevine xylem embolism resistance spectrum to identify varieties and regions at risk in a future dry climate

Laurent J. J. Lamarque et al.

Summary: Maintaining wine production under global warming requires optimizing plant material selection and developing drought-resistant grapevine cultivars. However, the lack of understanding of drought resistance differences among Vitis genotypes hampers progress. We studied xylem embolism vulnerability in 30 Vitis species and varieties from different locations and climates, and assessed drought vulnerability in 329 viticultural regions worldwide. We found that vulnerability to embolism decreased during summer within a variety, and there were wide variations in drought resistance among grapevine varieties. Hydraulic traits are crucial for improving viticulture suitability under climate change.

Towards a sustainable viticulture: The combination of deficit irrigation strategies and agroecological practices in Mediterranean vineyards. A review and update

Pascual Romero et al.

Summary: This study reviews different physiologically-based water-saving irrigation strategies and methods, and discusses how integrating these practices with sustainable soil management and agroecological practices can enhance efficiency, quality, and resilience in Mediterranean vineyards. Analysis includes deficit irrigation strategies, latest advances in regulated deficit irrigation and partial root zone drying, and other less common irrigation methods to improve water use efficiency and quality in vineyards. The research also explores sustainable soil management practices and their potential benefits in creating more resilient and sustainable agricultural systems in semi-arid areas.

Rootstock-conferred traits affect the water use efficiency of fruit production in Shiraz

E. J. Edwards et al.

Summary: The type of rootstock can affect the growth and yield of the scion by conferring specific traits. This study found that rootstock conferred vigor and crop water use index were related, and using rootstocks with low vigor can improve the water use efficiency of fruit production.

Summary: Selecting genotypes with better capacity to respond and adapt to soil water deficits is crucial for sustainable grapevine cultivation. This research explores the genetic diversity in water use efficiency (WUE) within the Grenache cultivar and finds that stomatal regulation and photosynthetic capacity play key roles in determining the differences in WUE among genotypes.

Water deficit responses of field-grown Pinot noir mediated by rootstock genotypes in a cool climate region

Claudia Rita de Souza et al.

Summary: Water scarcity is expected to worsen in grape-growing regions due to global warming. Selecting drought-tolerant rootstocks can help mitigate the negative impact of soil water deficit on vine functioning. This study found that different rootstocks had varying effects on vine water status, while having minimal impact on gas exchange.

Intracultivar genetic diversity in grapevine: Water use efficiency variability within cv. Grenache

Ignacio Buesa et al.

Summary: The study showed significant differences in water use efficiency among 13 Grenache grape genotypes at different levels, with high consistency among levels despite large interannual variability. Using genotype-specific regressions allows for significant differences in water use efficiency responses to be identified, and the relationship between net photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, and carbon isotope discrimination were confirmed as reliable physiological indicators for selecting grapevine genotypes under future environmental conditions.
