Does contract farming enhance farm efficiency? A case of wheat growers of Haryana, India

Summary: This study evaluates the impact of contract farming (CF) on farm efficiency for wheat growers in Haryana, North India. The results show that CF adopters are significantly more efficient than non-adopters. Moreover, farmers who adopt CF would experience a 16% decrease in technical efficiency if they do not participate, while non-adopters would see a 12% increase in technical efficiency if they adopt CF. This is due to the provision of higher quality inputs and improved production technology through CF. However, some farmers are facing financial constraints, such as delayed payment, high cost of inputs, and lack of timely financial assistance.

Oil palm expansion among non-industrial producers in Cameroon: Potentials for synergy between agro-economic gains and ecological safeguards

Summary: This study examines the drivers of oil palm production among non-industrial producers in the humid rainforest zone of Cameroon. Various socio-economic and institutional factors have different relationships with the likelihood of cultivating oil palm and the area under oil palm cultivation, including expected profitability, market orientation, land tenure security, and access to improved farm inputs. The results indicate that oil palm cultivation is prevalent among all farm groups, especially in large farms, with factors such as transaction costs and labor availability also influencing production.

Three hurdles towards commercialisation: integrating subsistence chickpea producers in the market economy

Summary: Enhancing agricultural productivity through the adoption of improved technologies, especially through increased commercialisation, is a credible pathway to economic development and poverty reduction. Our study finds that the adoption of improved chickpea has a significant positive effect on smallholder commercialisation in Ethiopia, supporting the role of transaction cost in driving market participation.

Impact of agricultural commercialization on child nutrition in Ethiopia

Summary: The impact of smallholder commercialization on child undernutrition is heterogeneous. Lower and higher levels of commercialization lead to increased underweight and wasting, while medium intensities of commercialization reduce these problems. On the other hand, lower and higher levels of commercialization result in increased stunting, but medium doses of commercialization decrease stunting, with the overall effect remaining insignificant. The estimated effects also differ across time and space, commercialization doses, age, asset ownership, and gender. Therefore, policies that are sensitive to regional, locational, infrastructural, temporal, gender, and age factors are needed to promote smallholder farmers' commercialization and reduce child undernutrition.

The effect of membership in producer organizations on women's empowerment: Evidence from Kenya

Summary: Producer organizations are important for achieving women empowerment in developing countries, but commercialization of smallholder farming can lead to women disempowerment. Women achieve higher control over production decisions, land and cows transactions, loans usage, and dairy income when the household joins any PO, regardless of the registered member's gender. Membership in bargaining POs results in greater empowerment for women, particularly in terms of cow ownership.
