Potential accumulation of toxic trace elements in soils during enhanced rock weathering

Xavier Dupla et al.

Summary: Terrestrial enhanced rock weathering (ERW) is a carbon sequestration technology that involves spreading rock powder on soils. This study evaluates whether rock powder application can lead to trace element accumulation in soils beyond regulatory limits. The results show that ERW can lead to the exceedance of some environmental regulatory limits within a decade, highlighting the need for careful site and rock selection to preserve long-term soil uses.

Timing leaf senescence: A generalized additive models for location, scale and shape approach

Bertold Marien et al.

Summary: Accurate estimations of phenophases in deciduous trees are crucial for understanding forest ecosystems and their impact on climate. This study collected chlorophyll content index data for four deciduous tree species from Belgium, Norway, and Spain over four years. The results revealed the phenological strategies and seasonal trends in leaf senescence for dry and warm years and identified daily average temperature, global radiation, and vapor pressure deficit as the main drivers of the timing of senescence transition. The study also found suitable modeling distributions for chlorophyll content index and senescence transition date.

Soil core study indicates limited CO2 removal by enhanced weathering in dry croplands in the UK

F. L. Buckingham et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the potential of enhanced weathering as a CO2 removal technique by simulating field conditions in a controlled setting. The results show that a one-time application of crushed basalt can release alkalinity and remove CO2 from UK soils, but repeated application may cause irreversible changes to soil compositions.

Effects of precipitation seasonality, irrigation, vegetation cycle and soil type on enhanced weathering - modeling of cropland case studies across four sites

Giuseppe Cipolla et al.

Summary: In this study, a comprehensive hydro-biogeochemical model was used to explore the influence of rainfall seasonality, vegetation and soil type on enhanced weathering (EW) and carbon sequestration dynamics. The results showed that these factors play a crucial role in determining the dissolution rates and carbon sequestration efficacy. Further analysis at the global scale is necessary to assess the effectiveness of EW for carbon sequestration.

The role of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in nonnative plant invasion along mountain roads

Jan Clavel et al.

Summary: This study found that roadside disturbance significantly increased fungal diversity and richness, while also promoting AM fungal root colonization in an environment dominated by ecto-mycorrhiza and ericoid-mycorrhiza. AM fungi associated with nonnative plant species were present across the entire elevation gradient, even above the highest elevational limit of nonnative plants.

Precipitation-productivity relationships and the duration of precipitation anomalies: An underappreciated dimension of climate change

Andrew J. Felton et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of future changes in the duration of precipitation anomalies on precipitation-net primary productivity (PPT-NPP) relationships. It suggests that the duration of wet and dry precipitation anomalies can affect aboveground NPP and may interact with the magnitude of anomalies. Differences in NPP responses between xeric and mesic ecosystems are likely due to demographic mechanisms. Further experiments are needed to unravel the independent and interactive impacts of the magnitude and duration of precipitation anomalies.

Risk of short-term biodiversity loss under more persistent precipitation regimes

Summary: Recent findings suggest that atmospheric warming prolongs weather patterns, potentially leading to a decline in plant diversity; longer dry and wet periods result in decreased species richness, highlighting the impact of timing of droughts and wet spells on physiological stress and mortality rates in plants.

Climate warming from managed grasslands cancels the cooling effect of carbon sinks in sparsely grazed and natural grasslands

Jinfeng Chang et al.

Summary: This study examines the global trends and regional patterns of grassland greenhouse gas balance from 1750 to 2012. It found that human management activities have caused grasslands to switch from a sink to a source of greenhouse gases, while climate change drivers contributed to a net carbon sink in soil organic matter. The net radiative forcing of all grasslands is currently close to neutral, but has been increasing since the 1960s.

Effects of mineralogy, chemistry and physical properties of basalts on carbon capture potential and plant-nutrient element release via enhanced weathering

Amy L. Lewis et al.

Summary: The study characterizes six mined basalts in terms of mineralogy, chemistry, particle size, and surface area, and assesses their potential impact on soil using reactive transport modeling. The results show that the carbon dioxide removal (CDR) potential from enhanced rock weathering varies depending on the type of basalt used and the duration of weathering.

Potential CO2 removal from enhanced weathering by ecosystem responses to powdered rock

Daniel S. Goll et al.

Summary: Simulations suggest that vegetation's enhanced CO2 uptake from powdered rock can be a feasible option in mitigating climate change, with enhanced weathering being a potential negative emission technology. Amending soil with powdered basalt may effectively enhance ecosystem carbon storage, but scaling up and addressing potential side effects are necessary.
