SARcopenia Assessment in Hypertension The SARAH Study

Murat Kara et al.

Summary: The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between sarcopenia and renin-angiotensin system-related disorders and explore the effects of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and angiotensin II receptor blockers on muscle mass/function and physical performance. The results showed a strong association between hypertension and sarcopenia, and different antihypertensive drugs had different effects on muscle mass and function.

The effect of social isolation on sarcopenia: a longitudinal study among the middle-aged and older population in China

Peipei Hu et al.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the long-term association between social isolation and possible sarcopenia. The research found that social isolation was closely associated with an increased risk of possible sarcopenia, and progressive social isolation further elevated the risk. The most vulnerable groups were middle-aged and older individuals who lived alone, were not socially active, and lacked contact with their children.

Sarcopenia and Cardiovascular Diseases

Abdulla A. Damluji et al.

Summary: Sarcopenia refers to the loss of muscle strength, mass, and function, commonly aggravated by chronic comorbidities. It is associated with faster progression of cardiovascular diseases, increased mortality risk, falls, and reduced quality of life, especially among older adults. The underlying causes of sarcopenia include an imbalance between anabolic and catabolic muscle processes, as well as neuronal degeneration.

Diet for the prevention and management of sarcopenia

Riccardo Calvani et al.

Summary: Sarcopenia is a geriatric condition characterized by progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength, leading to increased risk of adverse health outcomes. Currently, there are no pharmacological remedies available for prevention or management of sarcopenia. The most effective strategies involve adopting healthier lifestyle behaviors, including high-quality diets and regular physical activity.

Summary: A systematic review and meta-analysis of 90 prospective cohort studies showed that both social isolation and loneliness were significantly associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality, as well as cancer and cardiovascular disease-specific mortality. The findings highlight the importance of focusing on social isolation and loneliness to improve well-being and reduce mortality risk.

Oxidative stress: Roles in skeletal muscle atrophy

Han Zhang et al.

Summary: Oxidative stress plays a critical role in the development of muscle atrophy, and is regulated by various factors. This review provides an overview of the sources of oxidative stress in skeletal muscle and its correlation with inflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, autophagy, protein synthesis, proteolysis, and muscle regeneration. The role of oxidative stress in muscle atrophy caused by various pathological conditions has also been discussed, along with the potential therapeutic strategies for alleviating oxidative stress. This review will contribute to the development of novel therapeutic strategies and drugs for muscle atrophy.

Sleep, physical activity, and sedentary behaviors as factors related to depression and health-related quality of life among older women living alone: a population-based study

Soyoung Jang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the factors related to depression and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among older women living alone (OWLA), focusing on their health behaviors. Data analysis from the Korean National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey revealed that sleep was associated with depression, while physical activity and sedentary behaviors were related to HRQoL. Household income was only associated with HRQoL. The findings emphasize the importance of targeting specific healthy behaviors to improve the well-being of OWLA.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the association and causal relation between living alone and all-cause mortality. The findings showed that living alone was associated with increased mortality, with age and sex modifying the association. Living alone increased the risk of dying only in younger individuals, and the effect may be stronger in males than females.
