Experimental investigation of effects of pulsed injection on flow structure and flame development in a kerosene-fueled scramjet with pilot hydrogen

Ye Tian et al.

Summary: The effects of pulsed injection on flow structure and flame development in a scramjet were investigated experimentally. The results showed that pulsed injection led to more stable and intense combustion of kerosene. It greatly helped to achieve ignition and stable combustion of kerosene.

Numerical investigation of the scale effects of the flame flashback phenomenon in scramjet combustors

Guoyan Zhao et al.

Summary: The study highlights the scale effects of flame flashbacks inside an ethylene-fueled scramjet combustor, showing that larger scale engines have the potential to yield more intense combustion and enhance boundary-layer separation. Differences in boundary-layer profiles may result in accelerated flame propagation speed.

Scale effect of gas injection into a supersonic crossflow

Changhai Liang et al.

Summary: This study focused on the scale effect of transverse gas fuel injected into a Ma=2.95 supersonic flow. NPLS and oil flow techniques were used to study flow structures and jet penetration, while the RANS model was employed to investigate fuel mixing characteristics. Turbulent boundary layer was found to play a crucial role in the scale effect of jet penetration and mixing characteristics.

Scaling effects on combustion modes in a single-side expansion kerosene-fueled scramjet combustor

Fan LI et al.

Summary: The experimental investigation on two different scramjet combustors with varying mass flow rates reveals that scaling effects can impact combustion modes, with larger-scale combustors broadening the flame rich blowout limit and transitioning from cavity-stabilized mode to jet-wake-stabilized mode. Differences in cavity residence time, ignition delay time, and Damkohler number due to scale differences likely account for the observed scaling effects.

Pilot hydrogen enhanced combustion in an ethylene-fueled scramjet combustor at Mach 4

Ye Tian et al.

Summary: This study investigates the combustion process in an ethylene-fueled scramjet combustor through numerical simulation and experiments, dividing the process into six parts. The combustion process involves nonreacting flow, hydrogen injection leading to shock waves, hydrogen combustion, hydrogen and ethylene combustion, ethylene combustion alone, and flame extinguishing.

Investigation of combustion characteristics in a hydrogen-fueled scramjet combustor

Summary: The combustion characteristics of a hydrogen-fueled scramjet combustor were studied experimentally and numerically. Higher equivalence ratio of hydrogen may have longer ignition times and different combustion modes such as supersonic and subsonic.
