Large eddy simulations of a turbulent mixing layer periodically excited with fundamental and third harmonic frequency

Joerg Schluter et al.

Summary: A better understanding of the mixing behavior of excited turbulent mixing layers is crucial for aerospace applications. This study focuses on the mixing effects of low and high frequency excitation in turbulent mixing layers. Two different vortex pairing mechanisms are observed depending on the phase shift between the two excitation frequencies. The influence of these mechanisms on mixing a passive scalar is studied, and the results show that a phase shift of D/1/4 p yields the best mixing performance.

Three-dimensional study of flow past blunt headed cylinder at low Reynolds numbers

Ashish P. Pawar et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a numerical model to study the transition to three-dimensionality and the evolution of vortices in the wake of a blunt-headed cylinder considering air as the working fluid in the range of Reynolds number (Re) 130-2000. An experimental setup is developed to validate the numerical model based on heat transfer characteristics. The study categorizes the flow into dynamically steady symmetric flow (50 <= Re <= 200), dynamically steady unsymmetric flow (220 <= Re <= 270), and unsteady flow (Re >= 280) based on the symmetry and time dependence characteristics. The phenomenon of vortex dislocation during the transition to three-dimensionality, characterized by intermittent low frequency pulsations, is investigated. The aerodynamic characteristics are studied by computing force coefficients and Strouhal number (St), while a brief overview of heat transfer characteristics is also provided. Dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) analysis is conducted to quantitatively determine the critical Re at which secondary instability occurs, providing a clear demarcation of the valid Reynolds number regime for the two-dimensional analysis of blunt-headed cylinder.

Spiral flow instability between a rotor and a stator in high-speed turbomachinery and its relation to fan noise

Takao Suzuki

Summary: Hydrodynamic instabilities in turbomachinery interstage and their relation to fan broadband noise were studied. Three distinct unstable regimes were identified using compressible linear stability analysis. Extracted DMD modes from the IDDES database showed characteristics predicted by linear stability analysis. Proper orthogonal decomposition revealed dominant duct acoustic modes in the interstage, which contributed to interaction noise associated with disturbances in the rotor wakes and quasi-stationary structures near the outer wall.

Large-eddy simulations of self-excited thermoacoustic instability in a premixed swirling combustor with an outlet nozzle

Yuze Sun et al.

Summary: This study explores the generation and mitigation mechanisms of self-excited pulsating oscillations in combustion systems with reduced greenhouse gases and nitrogen oxides emissions. Numerical simulations and physical analysis suggest that the use of an outlet nozzle can attenuate fuel fraction fluctuations, process vortices, and modify the temperature field, thus reducing the adverse effects of pulsating combustion.

Modal analysis of compressor cascades with sweeping jet actuator and pulsed jet for active flow control based on large Eddy simulation

Shaowen Chen et al.

Summary: This study used large eddy simulation to investigate the effects of endwall pulsed jet and suction-surface sweeping jet actuator controls on corner separation. Modal analysis methods were applied to extract the main structures in the flow field and analyze the mechanism of unsteady jet effects. The results showed that both jet schemes could control corner separation through the induced small-scale flow structures or large-scale streamwise vortex.

Dynamic mode decomposition and Koopman spectral analysis of boundary layer separation-induced transition

A. Dotto et al.

Summary: In this study, dynamic mode decomposition and Koopman spectral analysis were applied to particle image velocimetry experimental data of a flat plate, focusing on separated-flow transition processes under different Reynolds numbers, turbulence intensities, and adverse pressure gradient conditions. It was found that Koopman analysis outperforms DMD, especially under low turbulence intensity and high Reynolds number conditions, in identifying Kelvin-Helmholtz vortices induced by KH instability and characterizing their shedding frequency and wavelength.
