Troposphere-to-mesosphere microphysics of carbon dioxide ice clouds in a Mars Global Climate Model

A. Maattanen et al.

Summary: The study implemented full CO2 ice cloud microphysics into the LMD Mars Global Climate Model and conducted global simulations. The model results compared well with observations, reproducing the seasonal and latitudinal variability of CO2 ice clouds. The study also quantified the contribution of these clouds to surface CO2 ice deposits.

Vertical Aerosol Distribution and Mesospheric Clouds From ExoMars UVIS

Paul M. Streeter et al.

Summary: The vertical opacity structure of the martian atmosphere and its relationship with ice and dust are studied using data from the UVIS spectrometer aboard the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter. Regional dust storms are found to enhance the transport of vapor to mesospheric altitudes, and the season of the dust storms impacts the lifetime of cloud features.

Role of Thermal Tides and Gravity Waves in Mars Equatorial Mesospheric Cloud Formation Revealed by Mars Climate Sounder Observations

M. Slipski et al.

Summary: The authors study the mesospheric CO2-ice clouds in the atmosphere of Mars and find that their spatial distribution and seasonal evolution are governed by the interplay of thermal tides and gravity waves. They also investigate the nighttime cloud distribution and provide an explanation for the observed day-to-night differences.

A Long-Term Study of Mars Mesospheric Clouds Seen at Twilight Based on Mars Express VMC Images

J. Hernandez-Bernal et al.

Summary: By analyzing images obtained by the Visual Monitoring Camera on Mars Express between 2007 and 2020, researchers found that most clouds observed during twilight on Mars are located in the mesosphere, especially in the region between Terra Cimmeria and Aonia in the southern mid-latitudes. This suggests the presence of an unknown mechanism that increases the likelihood of hosting high altitude clouds around the southern winter solstice.
