Time Lag Between Cosmic-Ray and Solar Variability: Sunspot Numbers and Open Solar Magnetic Flux

Sergey A. Koldobskiy et al.

Summary: Solar magnetic activity is responsible for the 11-year cyclic variability observed in different space environmental indices. However, the variations can be delayed due to different physical processes involved. By analyzing the time lags between solar and heliospheric indices, it was found that the variability of galactic cosmic-ray (GCR) intensity lags behind sunspot numbers (SSN) by about eight 27-day rotations on average. The open solar flux (OSF) also lags behind SSN by about one year. GCR and OSF vary in almost opposite phases, showing a strong 22-year cycle in the delay.

PC index as a ground-based indicator of the solar wind energy incoming into the magnetosphere: (1) relation of PC index to the solar wind electric field EKL

O. A. Troshichev

Summary: This paper summarizes the research on the polar cap magnetic activity PC index, including its derivation method, relationships with solar wind electric field and magnetospheric field-aligned currents, and its response to solar wind dynamic pressure pulses. The study shows that there is a linear link between the PC index and the solar wind electric field, which remains valid regardless of solar activity cycle. It also discusses new ideas regarding the occasional differences between the PC indices in summer and winter polar caps and the mechanisms of solar wind influence on the magnetosphere.

Comparison of Geomagnetic Indices During Even and Odd Solar Cycles SC17-SC24: Signatures of Gnevyshev Gap in Geomagnetic Activity

Jouni Takalo

Summary: The study reveals a gap, known as the Gnevyshev gap (GG), in the time series of sunspot group areas between ascending and descending phases of the solar cycle, more pronounced in even-numbered cycles. This gap has an impact on geomagnetic disturbances indices, showing significant declines during and after the GG, especially for even cycles.

Hysteresis, time lag, and relation between solar activity and cosmic rays during solar cycle 24

Munendra Singh et al.

Summary: This study examines galactic cosmic ray (GCR) modulation during solar cycle 24 by analyzing neutron monitor data along with sunspot number (SSN) and 10.7 cm solar radio flux (SRF) data. It reveals differences in time lags during the two polarity states of the heliosphere, discussing these discrepancies in relation to existing modulation models. The weak solar activity cycle is compared to previous more active solar cycles for additional insights.

Elucidation of some solar parameters observed during solar cycles 21-24

Asheesh Bhargawa et al.

Summary: This study analyzed various solar parameters to examine solar activity during different solar cycles. It found that solar cycles 21 and 22 had higher correlation in certain parameters, while cycles 23 and 24 showed lower correlation, indicating a more regular solar activity in the former two cycles.

Numerical modeling of cosmic rays in the heliosphere: Analysis of proton data from AMS-02 and PAMELA

E. Fiandrini et al.

Summary: The study investigates the impact of solar modulation on galactic cosmic rays within the solar system and its underlying physical mechanisms. By analyzing proton flux data over the solar cycle, a simulation model for cosmic particles in the heliosphere was developed, with key model parameters determined and their evolution studied.
