Bing Zhao et al.

Summary: With the development of construction industrialization, the use of steam curing to produce precast concrete is widely used. In this study, the comprehensive utilization of iron-copper tailings (ICT) waste in steam-cured mortar (SCM) is investigated. The results show that the addition of appropriate ICT improves the mechanics and durability of SCM. Furthermore, the recycling of ICT in SCM demonstrates better economic and environmental benefits.

Behavior of Reinforced Concrete Beams without Stirrups and Strengthened with Basalt Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Sheets

Wei Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper presents a study on the shear capacity of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with externally bonded basalt fiber-reinforced polymer (BFRP) sheets through a series of four-point bending experiments. The experimental results demonstrate that the BFRP sheets can significantly enhance the shear capacity and ductility of RC beams. A three-dimensional finite-element model (FEM) incorporating cohesive elements is developed to analyze the fracture and mechanical behaviors of the BFRP sheet-strengthened RC beams. The proposed constitutive models accurately characterize the interface's normal separation, tangential slip, and friction, and the numerical simulations are in good agreement with the experimental results.

Summary: In this paper, an imaging-based approach using a designed ultrasonic phased array is proposed for the semi-quantitative characterization of interfacial debonding defects in CFST columns. The proposed method accurately detected and located the debonding defects in the 16 CFST columns of the Shenzhen SEG Building, with a comprehensive debonding rate as high as 46.6%. The results validate the accuracy and applicability of the proposed ultrasonic phased array method for nondestructive inspection in civil engineering.

Quantitative Determination of High-Order Crack Fabric in Rock Plane

Xuefeng Li et al.

Summary: An accurate measurement method of crack fabric is proposed based on the density, geometry, and spatial distribution in cracks. The crack is automatically identified and determined through image processing techniques. The method utilizes high-order fabric tensor to quantitatively describe the anisotropy of cracks, with higher-order tensor providing more accurate direction and degree of anisotropy. The proposed method is verified to be rational and effective through CT image analyses.

Experimental research on consolidation creep characteristics and microstructure evolution of soft soil

Jie Yuan et al.

Summary: In this study, one-dimensional consolidation creep tests and SEM tests were conducted to investigate the macroscopic mechanical properties and microscopic evolution mechanism of Nansha soft soil during consolidation creep. The results show that the creep process of Nansha soft soil can be divided into three phases: initial instantaneous deformation phase, attenuation creep phase, and stable creep phase. The creep deformation increases with the consolidation creep stress. During the creep process, the distance between particles decreases, particles are gradually broken, the quantity of particles and pores increases but their volume decreases, and the shape of particles and pores changes. The consolidation creep stress determines the particles distance and the degree of fragmentation, and this trend is more pronounced with the increase of the consolidation creep stress.

A review on hollow fiber membrane module towards high separation efficiency: Process modeling in fouling perspective

Xianhui Li et al.

Summary: This review provides a comprehensive overview of the development of hollow fiber MF/UF membrane filtration models, highlighting the lack of research on the interactions between membrane fouling and local filtration hydrodynamics. It suggests the need for simplified models to represent the actual filtration behavior of hollow fiber membranes, taking into account complex hydrodynamics and membrane properties for accurate prediction of membrane filtration performance.

Reliability-based analysis of the flexural strength of concrete beams reinforced with hybrid BFRP and steel rebars

Wei Zhang et al.

Summary: The durability problem of reinforced concrete structures is significant in civil engineering due to the tendency of steel rebars to rust. Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) rebars have emerged as a substitute for reinforcement due to their corrosion resistance, lightweight, and easy construction. However, the low elastic modulus and brittle failure nature of FRP rebars lead to large deflections and cracks in FRP concrete beams without obvious warning signs. The hybrid reinforced concrete beam, which combines the advantages of steel rebars and FRP rebars, is a promising structural form. Hence, reliability analysis is essential to ensure the safety of these hybrid reinforced beams.

A Wiener degradation process with drift-based approach of determining target reliability index of concrete structures

Zhenhao Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel approach to determine the target reliability index of concrete structures based on modeling performance degradation as a stochastic process. The approach involves simulating the degradation process using the Wiener process with drift, estimating the drift and diffusion coefficients, deducing the relationship between compressive strength and the amount of degradation, calculating statistical parameters of compressive strength, and determining the reliability index of a structure at different service life. Additionally, the time-varying failure probability of structural durability degradation is calculated based on the drift Wiener process model, and a comparison is made between the calculated time-varying reliability index and the time-varying failure probability to determine the recommended values of target reliability index for structural bearing capacity.

Frequency characteristics of a viscoelastic graphene nanoplatelet-reinforced composite circular microplate

Aria Ghabussi et al.

Summary: This study examines the frequency analysis of a graphene nanoplatelet composite circular microplate using a numerical-based generalized differential quadrature method. It finds that factors such as the outer to inner radius ratio, length scale and nonlocal to thickness ratios, and graphene nanoplatelet weight fraction significantly influence the frequency characteristics of the microplate. The research suggests that for designing such microplates, attention should be paid to factors like outer to inner radius ratio, graphene nanoplatelet weight fraction, and their interplay.
