Record-high near-band-edge optical nonlinearities and two-level model correction of poled polymers by spectroscopic electromodulation and ellipsometry

Taili Liu et al.

Summary: Our study using Stark effect electromodulation spectroscopy investigated the changes in optical absorption and refraction in newly developed EO polymers, resulting in record-high EO effects in poled thin films. Through Kramers-Kronig analysis, we obtained high second-order nonlinear coefficients, believed to be the highest in poled polymers, showcasing the potential for high-speed light-modulators using EO polymers for on-chip applications.

Efficient, Stable, and Scalable Push-Pull Heptamethines for Electro-Optics

Di Zhang et al.

Summary: This study reports the synthesis and analysis of structure-property relationship of dipolar heptamethines containing a strong electron acceptor. The results show that these compounds have lower electro-optic activities but better chemical and thermal stability and higher synthetic efficacy. By fine-tuning the structure and properties of the molecules, larger nonlinear optical effects have been achieved in photonic devices.

Critical Role of Non-classical Intermolecular Hydrogen Bonding in Affecting the π-π Stacking and Nonlinear Optical Properties of Tricyanofuran-Based Push-Pull Heptamethines

Di Zhang et al.

Summary: This study introduces a novel class of push-pull heptamethines based on TCF, which exhibit unique crystal packing and NLO properties. The optimized supramolecular assembly of these compounds, through a combination of steric effects, non-classical C-H center dot center dot center dot N hydrogen bonding, and intermolecular pi-pi stacking, leads to significantly improved EO coefficients and larger molecular hyperpolarizabilities.

Near-infrared dyes for two-photon absorption in the short-wavelength infrared: strategies towards optical power limiting

Simon Pascal et al.

Summary: This work provides an overview of recent advances in two-photon absorbing chromophores active in the short-wavelength infrared (SWIR) spectral range, describing common strategies and structure-property relationships leading to near-infrared (NIR) electronic absorption of chromophores. A complete review of molecules featuring two-photon absorption (2PA) beyond 1100 nm is presented for potential use in optical power limiting applications. Recent progress in optical power limiting in the SWIR band is reported, emphasizing the use of the two-photon induced excited state absorption (ESA) process as an enhancer.

Systematic study of the structure-property relationship of a series of near-infrared absorbing push-pull heptamethine chromophores for electro-optics

Di Zhang et al.

Summary: This study presents the facile synthesis, characterization, and quantitative structure-property relationship analysis of tricyanofuran-based dipolar heptamethines with different electron donors. The chromophores exhibit high near-infrared absorption, excellent chemical stability, and large hyperpolarizabilities in poled films. The results suggest that concise synthesis and molecular design of push-pull polymethines can be guided by their linear and nonlinear optical properties in bulk materials, leading to the development of high performance organic electro-optic materials for photonic applications.
