When Chirophotonic Film Meets Wrinkles: Viewing Angle Independent Corrugated Photonic Crystal Paper

Seok-In Lim et al.

Summary: This study fabricates wrinkled photonic crystal papers (PCPs) and demonstrates their consistent reflection of colors regardless of viewing angles. The results also show that changing the wrinkle direction can reduce the angular-dependent optical reflection. Additionally, a directionally independent 2D wavy-wrinkled PCP is developed.

Emergence of disordered branching patterns in confined chiral nematic liquid crystals

Sebastian Echeverria-Alar et al.

Summary: Spatial branching processes are observed in chiral nematic liquid crystals, where a cholesteric phase self-organizes into extended branching patterns. We study the spatial and temporal organization of thermally driven branching patterns in chiral nematic liquid crystal cells experimentally, and describe the observations using a mean-field model.

Evaporation-Driven Liquid-Liquid Crystalline Phase Separation in Droplets of Anisotropic Colloids

Hamed Almohammadi et al.

Summary: Drying colloidal droplets with evaporation-induced concentration gradients inside provides opportunities for self-assembly, thin film deposition, microfabrication, and DNA stretching. We investigated the drying process of liquid crystalline droplets undergoing liquid-liquid crystalline phase separation (LLCPS) during evaporation. We discovered that progressive up-concentration inside the drying droplets leads to the formation of liquid crystalline microdroplets of different shapes, and amyloid fibrils can suppress the coffee-ring effect during droplet evaporation. Additionally, cholesteric structures emerge in the drying droplet but do not form a uniform dried film, although it can be regulated through the kinetics of the evaporation process.

Design of experiments to investigate multi-additive cellulose nanocrystal films

Patrik Nilsson et al.

Summary: In this study, the influence of additive content on film properties and homogeneity of self-assembled structure in cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) suspensions was investigated using design of experiments (DoE) approach. The results demonstrated that DoE can predict film properties in multi-additive systems, and most additives were found to reduce the homogeneity of the self-assembled structure.

Summary: This study explores the coupling between orientationally ordered amyloid fibrils and rod-shaped plasmonic nanoparticles, demonstrating enhanced fluorescence in the hybrid material. The findings suggest a potential approach to improve the detection of amyloid deposits based on their enhanced intrinsic luminescence.
