Summary: In this study, a new acceptor L8-BO was combined with the B1:BO-4Cl system to construct efficient ternary all-small-molecule organic solar cells (ASM-OSCs). Theoretical, morphological, and crystallographic studies showed that L8-BO and BO-4Cl had good compatibility, leading to the formation of an alloy-like state in the ternary blend. The synergy between the two acceptors promoted favorable phase separation and molecular stacking, enhancing charge splitting and extraction and resulting in improved short-circuit current density and fill factor. Furthermore, the alloy-like state of the acceptors and the higher energy level of L8-BO helped reduce voltage loss in the ternary ASM-OSCs compared to binary devices. The optimal ternary ASM-OSCs with 20 wt% L8-BO achieved a top-level efficiency of 17.10%.

Summary: By finely modulating the energy levels and absorption spectra, organic semiconducting materials with fluorine or chlorine substitution are designed for efficient polymer solar cells (PSCs). In this study, two small molecular acceptors with fluorine or chlorine substitution are selected to prepare ternary PSCs with a polymer donor. The optimal ternary PSCs exhibit a high power conversion efficiency of 18.66% by increasing the open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current density, and fill factor. The addition of chlorine substitution enhances the crystallization and intermolecular interaction, leading to improved charge transport and device performance.

Summary: In this study, two asymmetric isomeric small molecule acceptors (SMAs) with asymmetric alkyl chains and selenophene-based central core were synthesized for organic solar cells (OSCs). Crystallographic analysis showed that AYT9Se11-Cl had a more compact and ordered intermolecular packing compared to AYT11Se9-Cl, resulting in higher electron mobility in neat AYT9Se11-Cl film. The PM6 : AYT9Se11-Cl blend film exhibited better morphology with appropriate phase separation and distinct face-on orientation compared to PM6 : AYT11Se9-Cl. The OSCs with PM6 : AYT9Se11-Cl achieved a superior power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.12% compared to PM6 : AYT11Se9-Cl (17.52%), making it the highest efficiency for selenium-incorporated SMAs in binary BHJ OSCs.

Summary: The study demonstrates that high-performance organic solar cells (OSCs) can be obtained from hot spin processing of different non-halogenated solvents, achieving the highest reported efficiency of OSCs so far. The phase evolution of ternary blends during solution-to-solid transition is found to be correlated to the substrate temperature, and optimal blend films can be secured in various non-halogenated solvents with elevated substrate temperature. As a result, high-performance OSCs with excellent power conversion efficiencies have been achieved in o-xylene, p-xylene, and toluene, respectively, representing the best-performing OSCs made from non-halogenated solvents to date.
