Interface Engineering of Zinc Electrode for Rechargeable Alkaline Zinc-Based Batteries

Quanchao Zhang et al.

Summary: Rechargeable aqueous zinc-based batteries have gained attention for their high capacity, eco-friendly nature, and cost effectiveness. However, challenges remain for the commercialization of these batteries, particularly in regard to the limited reversibility of the zinc electrode. Dendrite growth, electrode passivation, shape change, and side reactions significantly impact battery performance and are related to the interfacial properties.

Stabilizing zinc anodes for long-lifespan zinc-nickel battery through the in-situ construction of zincophilic interface layer

Xiaorui Liu et al.

Summary: Zinc-nickel batteries are considered ideal for next-generation energy storage due to their high safety, low cost, and excellent rate performance. However, the limited reversibility of the zinc electrode hinders their shelf life and cycling life. By constructing a dense and uniform ZnS coating layer on the ZnO surface, the stability of the ZnO anode is improved, resulting in enhanced reversibility and reactivity. The ZnS layer also protects the active zinc and regulates ion migration, mitigating shape change and dendrites growth. This results in a zinc-nickel battery with improved storage life and cycling life, demonstrating great promise for practical applications.

Direct Ink Writing of 3D Zn Structures as High-Capacity Anodes for Rechargeable Alkaline Batteries

Cheng Zhu et al.

Summary: The structure-performance relationship in alkaline Zn batteries is important and anode morphology can address various issues. However, tailoring 3D hosts is limited due to increased mass or volume. This study discusses a direct write strategy for producing template-free metallic 3D Zn electrode architectures with high electrical resistivity, submillimeter sizes, and high mechanical stability. The printed Zn lattice anode combined with NiOOH cathode and alkaline polymer gel electrolyte exhibits excellent performance in terms of cycle life and capacity.

Zincophilic Cu Sites Induce Dendrite-Free Zn Anodes for Robust Alkaline/Neutral Aqueous Batteries

Lijun Zhou et al.

Summary: Electrochemically depositing Zn onto the Cu-Zn alloy surface can enhance Zn adsorption and promote homogeneous Zn nucleation, leading to highly reversible Zn plating/stripping chemistry. The Cu-Zn alloy's intrinsic inert nature towards the hydrogen evolution reaction and high dezincification potential can effectively mitigate hydrogen evolution and Zn corrosion in aqueous electrolyte. Symmetric cells with CZ-Zn electrodes exhibit outstanding cycling life in both alkaline and neutral electrolytes, surpassing pristine Zn electrodes.

Electroactive ZnO: Mechanisms, Conductivity, and Advances in Zn Alkaline Battery Cycling

Brendan E. Hawkins et al.

Summary: This study reveals an electroactive type of zinc oxide formed in zinc-metal alkaline electrodes and measures its electrical conductivity change. The study finds that the conductivity change of the electroactive zinc oxide is closely related to the insertion of protons into the crystal structure and electrons into the conduction band. In addition, the rapid crystal growth of the electroactive zinc oxide allows it to have efficiencies and rates competitive with leading electrochromic materials. Understanding this phenomenon helps improve the cycling performance of industrial-design electrodes and suggests potential applications of zinc oxide in other fields.

The magnetohydrodynamic effect enables a dendrite-free Zn anode in alkaline electrolytes

Peng Liang et al.

Summary: In this study, a static magnetic field was introduced to regulate the deposition/dissolution behavior of zinc in alkaline electrolytes, effectively addressing the dendrite issue. The presence of a magnetic field resulted in a uniform zinc plating layer and reduced surface roughness. Numerical simulation and electrochemical tests showed that the magnetic field alleviated concentration polarization and enhanced mass transfer, leading to long cycle life and stable operation at high current density in alkaline zinc batteries.
